Red Basil: Red Basil Thai Restaurant
  • Tip Rating:
  • Restaurant Name: Red Basil Thai Restaurant

Very upscale Thai restaurant. Lovely decor. Very clean lines. Large and spacious with a vaulted ceiling. Great food! Probably the most expensive Thai restaurant in Beijing.

Dawn and I had a lovely evening there. Make sure you reserve ahead of time. This is a great place to take someone on a first date!

Favorite Dish: Seafood Curry; Green Curry

  • WU MING JU (State Banquet Restaurant)
Many government officials dine here. I REALLY liked the private booths that you could get. Nice decor. Classy. The ladies are all dressed up and the service is good. (Excellent for China...)

Favorite Dish: There was this fantastic fish soup... And of course, I would always order my 'su shi jing' (assorted veggies)... Here I am with my Mom and her baby sister...I'm having Dowager Empress Tse Shi's favorite corn snack thingy for the first time...

Phrik Thai: WE SERVE THE PEOPLE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Restaurant Name: WE SERVE THE PEOPLE

    More like...We Serve the People..Not...

It's a great restaurant with great environment...but the manager (when we were there) had some racial issues...treating those of the Chinese origin as a second class race...but otherwise, a good restaurant with competitive prices relative to Golden Elephant (next door)...but I would still recommend Phrik Thai for service and value.

    Fantastic Malay/Thai/Indian Food
A bit pricey but well worth it!

This is a photo of my Haidian friends getting together for Diana's return to Beijing!
It was conveniently located not too far from home. The atmosphere was good in that it was clean. There were private rooms for special occasions as well.

Favorite Dish: Too many to list! The prata and garlic naan is very good! The curries are fantastic!

The photo is of my cousin, Stephen, and I at the grand piano...

    Fangshan (Imperial): Beijing Fangshan Restaurant
  • Tip Rating:
  • Restaurant Name: Beijing Fangshan Restaurant

Imperial cuisine in a palace...can't beat that! The restaurant is in Beihai Park. When we came in, they had a group of ladies dressed as Qing dynasty courtesans dancing in the main courtyard. Perry took me out for a VERY interesting dinner that included turtle, deer, and other rare imperial treats! I would HIGHLY recommend this as a MUST do activity! You can even REALLY splurge and book an Emperor's Banquet which you get to dress up as an Emperor for...you need to reserve and order WELL IN ADVANCE for the Emperor's dinner though...I think you eat over the course of a couple of days...

Red Capital Club: Red Capital Club
  • Tip Rating:
  • Restaurant Name: Red Capital Club

Fantastic atmosphere with a cigar room with old Communist elite style sofas (the white lacy couch covers and all!!!)...

The food was excessively expensive but the display was fantastic! (Though Brent carved our maiden that was made out of carrot into a maiden with two faces...)

This is one of the places where honorary guests and visiting dignitaries are taken to be wined and dined CHINESE style...

  • Tip Rating:

  • GREEN TEA HOUSE (MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN BEIJING!!! Unfortunately, I discovered this gem in the last week before I left for Canada...THANKS MATT FOR TAKING ME!!!)

This is a photo I borrowed off another site because THEY DON'T ALLOW PHOTOS!!! (I think they are concerned with people catching onto their unique and FABULOUS idea! It has the best ambience I've EVER seen in ALL of my travels!!!)
If you want to see the site that I got this photo from, go to:
    http://www.zingasia.com/articles/0,,6267-0-0-0-0,,00.html
    Beautiful surroundings...the sound of water...lush plants...gorgeous flowers...

Our placemats had been decorated with semi-precious stones and rose petals...GORGEOUS!!! These people know how to add the special touches...

The teas are TO DIE FOR! The food is FABULOUS! The portions are dainty...but absolutely DELECTABLE! You select your fresh bread from a little basket...VERY DELICIOUS! There was nothing that I did not LOVE at this restaurant...

Favorite Dish: The ice flower/fruit tea! (Best tea I've ever had!!!) EVERYTHING is PERFECT!!!

Classy place! (Very upscale...) Fantastic grill and seafood! LOVE the atmosphere! They have business lunch sets that are a good deal! (These specials are restricted to the downstairs area...Upstairs has the regular menu...)

Favorite Dish: Filet Mignion is FANTASTIC!

Hi. Just come across your travelogue with the embassy christmas party 99. Did you know an Irish student at the University called Sile O'Broin?
