St. Louis is located in the north of Senegal near the Mauritanian border and at about 275 km north of Dakar.
Here the Senegal river ends into the Atlantic Ocean. The city is built on an island in the river-delta. One bridge (the Faidherbe-bridge) links it to the continent, another one to the "Langue de Barbarie", a 25 km long and 200 m large beach stroke along the Ocean, where most of the hotels are situated. St. Louis was the capitol of Senegal until 1957, when Dakar succeeded to St. Louis.
