Amazing South of India

by cadzand - last update: May 22, 2005

in the countryside
Back after my journey through the South of India with so much mixed feelings.

Tired of course because of the long trip : +- 2000 km at an average speed of 30 km/h. through overcrowded cities and along small and "under construction" roads in the unruffled countryside.

I have seen so many wonderful temples and exquisite palaces, attended many ceremony, wandered through lush natural parks, wide-spread tea plantations and my beloved flourishing paddy fields. I have strolled through local markets, smelling the many flowers fragrances and a lot of colourful spices.

But also seen the rape caused by the tsunami on the south-east coast and met some fishermen who have survived to this catastrophe...

Knowing that mountains of money have been raised worldwide, to me, it's still hard to agree India hasn't accepted the international aid for their victims. Those people are still living in miserable conditions in tent camps near their devastated beaches. Still they remain very calm and proper.

All those images and feelings are still shoving around in my head and I'll need some time to calm them down in a correct way.

As I was touring around through three of the South Indian states, that are Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, I've built my travelogues as a continuous page and split them up under the different cities.

It all started in the Karnataka State, at Bangalore and went via Hassan, Belur,
Halebid, Somnathpur and Srirangapatnam (Shrirangapattana) to Mysore.

Then we crossed the Tamil Nadu State border only to visit Ooty (Udagamandalam) in the Nilgiri mountains, before entering the Kerala State with the visit to Cochin (Kochi) and its Backwaters, Periyar Lake and Thekkady.

Again we crossed the Tamil Nadu border for our visit to Madurai, Tanjore (Thanjavur), Trichy (Tiruchirappali), Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram), Kanchipuram and Madras (Chennai).

This page is "under construction" (as the roads in India :-))
Please be patient. I'll add as one goes along the different cities.
