"A trip to the gate to the desert" Tunisia by cadzand

Last november, as our sky was painted in a heavy grey, we decided to look out for a more coloured surroundings and ended up in Tunesia, more exactly on the island of Djerba in the Gabes bay, from where we started a desert tour to Medinine, Toujane famous for its carpets , Matmata and the troglodyte houses and Douz , spending the first night at the gate of a beautiful desert.

From Douz our trip went by Kebili from where we crossed the Chott el Jerid, an enormous salt lake and arrived at Tozeur. We crossed another salt lake the Chott el Rharsa on the road to Chebikha, with its very nice mountain oasis. We left the nice Atlas landscapes of Tamerza, near the algerian border behind, to go east to Metlaoui and Gafsa and from there to Gabès and his unique seaside oasis. From there we took the "bac" to return on Djerba where we spent a couple of days of "dolce farniente".

FANTASTIC country, tour and page - great overview. personally i liked deep south the most including Djerba at the seaside.
