SOMA does not mean walk south along Market Street. That was what I initially thought and I ended up in the Tenderloin, an area with homeless people, drug addicts and crack dealers. Not an area to be stuck in late at night.

The parking could be very expensive, especially in the downtown core. When going to San Francisco, try leaving your car. If you need to drive, park at a parking lot that is not in downtown (i.e. Haight-Ashbury) and take the bus into downtown.
