  • So after a day of flying (from Amsterdam towards Nairobi), we were brought to this Silver Springs Hotel.

It was about a 40 minutes drive from the airport (with an Overland truck).

So I thought it was just outside Nairobi, but the website says that the hotel is located about 2 km from the city centre. I had no idea as it was already very dark as we arrived.

The hotel looked decent, of course I can not compare with other hotels in Nairobi, as this was my first visit here.

The room was simple but ok for one night, only negative point was a kind of smell that something was burning; maybe we were near the chimney of the kitchen?

In the morning there was a big buffet, with a man who baked your eggs the way you desires, different king of bread, cheese, cereals (so plenty of that)

Unique Qualities: For me it was good as a transit hotel, not that I would stay here for a complete holiday or so.

  • After a long day of travelling (flying from Amsterdam to Nairobi), we had a decent night of sleep.

As the next morning the real adventure would begin, a round trip through Kenya and Uganda.

So on the way to the ground floor (we had a room on the third floor), we noticed that there was a pool at the inner courtyard of the hotel, it looked great. Unfortunately we had no time for a swim. No no our Overland truck was already waiting to show us the best of both countries (Kenya and Uganda).

Unique Qualities: A decent breakfast, and a great pool (if you have enough time)

  • This Kenya - Uganda trip that we had booked was indeed a camping trip.

So only the first night we stayed in a hotel in Nairobi (see previous tips), for the other 21 nights we had a tent.

The travel agency provided new tents that were given to us at the Schiphol airport.

These tents were very decent; it was a Dumbo model, for 3 people. So there was plenty of space in it for two people + luggage.

And there was also a kind of closed area just in front of the tent, (a small tunnel), which was very handy for an emergency pee during the night, specially in the cases when we were camping in the wild, and all kind of wild animals were just outside our tents (ex. near Lake Mburo in Uganda, the hippos came grazing near our tents during the night, I can assure you that it is not wise to go out for a pee at that time . . .)

Unique Qualities: plenty of space, easy to instal, rain proof

  • As we were travelling towards the Masai Mara National Park, coming from Uganda we stopped in Kericho to spend the night.

We did spend the night not in the Tea Hotel, but near the Tea Hotel.

As I told you before we were on a camping trip, so next to the garden and the swimming pool there was a small camping ground.

The hotel looked colonial, and it had a beautiful garden with lots of colourful flowers. Just a pity we did arrive a bit late, so we had not really time to explore the whole garden.

Unique Qualities: quiet, beautiful garden (with a pool)

  • We did not stay in the tea Hotel, but on the campground near the hotel, but still we had some time to discover the hotel (and the bar).

Especially the hall looked very colonial; there were several head of wild animals.

Only the head of the buffalo looked horrible, as they had mounted two green lamps instead of the eyes, well like this it was like something from out of space.

In the hall there was also a small shop, which was selling postcards, books, small souvenirs, candy and . . . . . . Belgian Chocolate (Cote d'or praline) . . . . . well that can taste, after 3 weeks of Africa, a good piece of Belgian Chocolate. . Yummy (price 90 Kenyan shilling)

Unique Qualities: the belgain choclate in the shop

  • So in Kericho, we did spend the night on the small campground near the Tea Hotel.

It was quiet, as we were the only group, and the thick grass was very soft, it was almost unnecessary to use a sleeping mat.

Also we went to the hotel bar to drink some beers (Tusker).

The toilets and the shower (without a door) were near the swimming pool.

The next morning it started to rain around 5.00, and like this when it was time to get out of the tent and to remove the tents it was still raining, so like this it was a very wet morning.
(Luckily for us, it was the only wet morning of the whole trip).

Unique Qualities: a quiet campground, very very soft grass to sleep on

Outstanding page! Beautiful pics: I like especially Buffalo after a mud bath and orange-headed Agama. I didn't know that 1/4 of the world population of flamingos can be seen in Lake Nakuru N. P.

Your trip to Kenya must have been so special--such a different culture from what I know. The tea plantations were interesting to see...as well as the beautiful scenery. THANKS!
