Kenya - Uganda (Mzungu in the Mist)

by filipdebont - last update: Sep 20, 2005

Ach, Finally a new summer, so time for a new trip.

Last year, I did see a documentary on Dianne Fossez and the Mountain Gorillas on National Geographic. Wow that touched me; I also wanted to see these endangered animals with my own eyes, no, no, not in a zoo but in the wild.

Like this I booked this Kenya – Uganda trip. It was organized by the Dutch travel agency Baobab (www.baobab.nl). By the way it was a 22 day round trip.

Early morning we did fly from Schiphol (the Dutch National airport near Amsterdam) with British Airways, via London Heathrow towards Nairobi in Kenya.

At the airport our Dutch tour guide Jacqueline waited for us, in order to bring us to a hotel just outside Nairobi to spend the night.
Flamingos in Nakuru N. P.
The next morning the real adventure started, with a big Overland truck we drove towards the Lake Nakuru National Park.

On the way to Lake Nakuru N.P. we stopped at a view point, here we had a splendid view over the Great Rift Valley (Grote Slenk) with the volcanoes Longorot and Suswa.

Finally we arrived at Lake Nakuru N.P.; we were al curious to some game. Nakuru N.P. is very famous for its Flamingos. Besides the Flamingos we did also see some Rhinos and Buffalos.(My Lake Nakuru N.P. page)

After our visit at Lake Nakuru N.P. we drove to the border of Uganda at Busia. In Uganda we visited Sipi Falls, Namwenda, the source of the Nile in Jinja, Kampala, Kibale N.P. (Chimps), Queen Elisabeth N.P., Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Mountain Gorillas), Lake Bunyoni and Lake Mburo. You can read more on these destinations on the respective pages (info and pictures will be added in the near future).
Wldebeasts during the Big Migration
So 16 days after we had left Kenya in order to visit Uganda we were back at the same border post in Busia. We would spend the last days of our Kenya – Uganda trip in the magnificent Masai Mara National Park.

Of course we made some game drives at the Masai Mara N.P., and we also visited a typical Masai village, but this was very touristy.

And I also booked a balloon trip over the Masai Mara N. P., Wow this was a unique experience. It was indeed my first balloon trip, and of course end of July is the beginning of the Big Migration, this period millions of animals are migrating from Tanzania towards Kenya. That was a fantastic spectacle.

And on the last evening, before we had our flight back home, we visited the famous meat restaurant The Carnivore in Nairobi. That was a splendid way to end an exciting trip.

Outstanding page! Beautiful pics: I like especially Buffalo after a mud bath and orange-headed Agama. I didn't know that 1/4 of the world population of flamingos can be seen in Lake Nakuru N. P.

Your trip to Kenya must have been so special--such a different culture from what I know. The tea plantations were interesting to see...as well as the beautiful scenery. THANKS!
