Brugge, die Scone (Bruges, the beautiful)

by filipdebont - last update: Dec 14, 2008

Rozenhoedkaai at night
In the past Brugge (Bruges) was called "die Scone" (the beautiful).

Later on it became known as the "Venice of the North", one of the most outstanding art and tourist attractions in the world.

It's about 30 km from my hometown to Brugge (1/2 hour drive by car).

End of August 2004 there was the Festival of the Channels. A great Festival with the picturesque, illuminated Channels as background, a great festival with historical scenes.

Ronde van Vlaanderen 2005

On Sunday 2nd of May 2005, Brugge was the scenery for the start of the legendary Tour of Flandres (De Ronde van Vlaanderen).

The cyclist startes at Het Zand, and then they went to De Markt for the inscription and the official start.

I was standing along the road which leads to the Markt, so we did see all the cyclists come by.

All the big names passed : Ludo Dierickx, George Hincapie, Stijn Devolder, Nico Mattan, Ekimov, Dekker and even the Boss himself Mister Lance Armstrong.

At the picture you see the future winner Tom Boonen toghether with his team mates Kevin Hulsmans and Bram Tankink.

Why I missed it? Very good restaurant tips and surely cholate tips ;-) Great pictures of old fairy-like houses and surprisingly of modern architecture as well. Great shots in Bruges By Night travelogue!

Thanks for your nice work on the beer houses of Bruges! I think you should also mention the Vlissinghe in Blekerstraat - not so many beers as Brugs Beertje or de Garre, but a nice old fashioned place out of the centre of town.

I had the best chocolate of my life when I visited Brugge years ago. I think it might have been in the shop that you have featured!
