I believe that a visit to Rome would be kind of incomplete without a visit of Vatican City (of course if you have plenty of time).
So while I was visiting Rome, I planned my visit at the Vatican on a Monday, as in Italy (almost) all the museums are closed except in the Vatican (which is officially not a part of Italy).
So a short ride with the Metro brought me near the entrance of the Vatican Museums. The doors opened at 9.00, and there was already a long queue of people who also wanted to visit the Vatican museums. But once the doors were open, the queue shortened very quickly.
Do not underestimate the Vatican museums, as there is too much to see. So it is better to make a kind of planning of the halls you certainly want to see.
For me the highlights were the Loggia of Rafaello, the Stanze of Rafaello, the library and of course the Sixtien Chapel.
From the post office inside the museum I did send some postcards (with a Vatican stamp) towards the ones left behind at home.
After visiting the museum, I walked towards the St Peter square. What a beautiful square surrounded with two galleries, and what a splendid view on the St Peter Basilica.
Then I first wanted to climb up the dome for a great birds eye view over St Peters square and the city of Rome.
Then it was time to visit the St Peters Basilica which is built above the tomb of the apostle Saint Peter.
After this visit I headed towards the Castel del Angel via the Via Dei Conciliazone. Of course as it was Monday, the Castle was closed and via the Angels bridge I reached the inner city of Rome. |
