Sightseeing: Red Telephone boxes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The well known Red telephone boxes, I believe these boxes are part of the London pride.

I did see that at some places, these classic telephone boxes are now replaced by more modern telephone boxes, what a pity.

    Architectural: Beautiful old buildings
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: If you walk around in London, It is really worth to look around.

There are plenty of beautiful old buildings, which are not mentioned in your travel guide, because they have no big historical past.

Like this old house I did see in Praed street, The Grand Junction Arms, I believe it was a former pub.

    Sightseeing: Pub Signs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Look Up, and discover the beautiful Pub Signs.
Like this one from the Fountains Abbey.

Of course, I am not telling you that you should stay outside to look at all the Pub signs, of course it is also great to go inside and taste a big Pint.

    Sightseeing: Pub names
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: At certain Pubs you can read the history behind the Pub name.
Outside the Pub there is a green board which explains the history of the place and its name.

Like on this board which says :

    FOUNTAINS ABBEY - Paddington W2

Paddington has always adequately provided hospitality for travellers in the form of local ale houses.
The fountains Abbey opened in 1824 and has been a popular meeting house from the early days.

Sir Alexander Fleming was a loyal regular to the Fountains Abbey.

Legend says that it was mould spores from this ale house which blew through Fleming's window, leading him to the discovery of Penicillin in 1928.

The Fountains Abbey derived its name from two different sources, "Fountains"marks nearby sites of early known springs and wells which were of great importance of inhabitants, "Abbey"stems from Westminster Abbey which possessed the manor of Paddington during Saxon times hence the name "Fountains Abbey"

    Londoners: Londonner ? ?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: You see these little posts everywhere in the city.

These post brought back the memory of the almost similar posts they have in Amsterdam.
And the name of these posts in Amsterdam is an Amsterdammerkes, that is why I named the London posts Londonner's.

If these posts have an official name, please let me know, that way I can adjust this tip.

Getting around: The Silver Jubilee Walkway
  • Tip Rating:
  • London Getting around
  • Silver Jubilee Walkway
  • by filipdebont
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Favorite Thing: In order to celibrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee, they created a self-guided walkway. This walkway is created in 1977 and brings you along an important part of London's architecture and history.

This silver jubilee walkway is ideal for a first visit to London, as it brings you to the highlights and is great to get a good first impression of the city.

I did not walk the complete walkway, but I did parts of it.

  • Favorite Thing: This seven mile walkway is created as a memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales. It brings you through London's Royal parks like St James Park, Green Park, Hyde park and Kensington Gardens.

Along the walkway you pass a lot of place which were associated with her, like Kensington Palace, Spencer House and Buckingham Palace.

    Londoners: Bobby
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Another popular view in London are the Bobby's.
Everybody knows them from seeing them in TV-shows or movies.

Just love these typical helmets. In the tourist shops you could buy a plastic version of this helmet, very funny.

    Londoners: Demonstration for Peace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: One side of Parliament Square was completely covered with flags, banners and Slogans; in fact it was a big demonstration for World Peace.

There were protest flags against the war in Iraq, and also several flags against the Chinese occupation of Tibet.
