Things To Do: Ettal - a great monastery

Ettal monastery was founded in 1330 and the first part of it was finished in 1370. The building was quite unusual for the gothic times, as the church was built almost round, with 12 edges and a central column holding the dome. That central column was taken away during the re-construction in 1724, when the church got its Baroque fassade and dome, as it looks today.

Things To Do: Bernini-elements in the fassade

The outside of the church reminds a lot of many great churches by Bernini in Italy, with the sculptures inside the niches.
The 2 towers of the monastery-church were built at a later time.

Things To Do: the old gothic entrance

|
This is the only entrance for the visitors to the church, but mostly people will not see the great gothic ornaments, as they somehow will search for the famous baroque interior only.
I have to admit, I also did not see it, when I entered the church, but I saw a pic of it on a postcard and finally went back in order to search for it and take a pic !

Things To Do: the dome

The dome is really breath-taking with all its great paintings and a lerge chandelier. Lots of windows around the dome will let in enough light into the church, so photography is possible almost without any problem.
100 or 200 ASA is enough, all my pics were made by my digital camera.

Things To Do: the organ
|
Tip Rating: |
 |
|
|
|
|
|
Have a look for this great organ, built on a small balcony in the back of the church.
On my pic you mya also see the large windows of the dome and the white walls, that add a lot in order to have such a light interior that is rather unusual inside such a church.

Things To Do: the pulpit

The pulpit is almost hidden between the oversized paintings of the various side-altars on the wall.
All over the church you may see this great combination of the white walls and many small golden ornaments.

Take a closer look at the great works of art, decorating the pulpit.
Enrico Zuccalli and Joseph Schmuzer were the artists, who made the great sculptures of the church interior in the 18th century.

This great work of art is the baptismal of the church, and you may easily oversee it on the left wall of the church.
From the beginning the church and monastery was ment to be a pilgrim-church on the way to Italy.

Things To Do: church-interior

The main altar is almost impossible to take a photo of.
It is inside an extra small room in front of the hall with the dome, and long ropes build a fence for the alarm, so approaching in order to take a pic is impossible.
Have a look for the lovely small balconies, that you may see at many places of the church, all beautifully decorated with golden ornaments !

Diana75 Fri Sep 29, 2006 20:25 UTC Kloster Ettal is a real jewel. I've had the chance to visit it last week and I was so amazed about it's beauty. I'd love to go back and spend more time there. Congratulations for this wonderful page. | willy_wonka Mon Jul 31, 2006 07:54 UTC i have never heard of ettal, but thanks to you i have learnt a bit now! looks like a beautiful place to explore! the dome of the church is just fantastic! | mtncorg Wed Sep 22, 2004 23:41 UTC Kloster Ettal is another great reason to tarry in this area of Upper Bavaria. I like the motto for the Ettaler Bier - probably after a couple of beers and the liqours, Heaven is really pretty close;-] | german_eagle Wed Mar 17, 2004 18:54 UTC I only rushed through enroute to Switzerland, but was also fascinated by the Baroque splendor. Brilliant pictures and very informative text, thanks! |
