The former german crowncolony of Tsingdao

by globetrott - last update: Apr 22, 2009

Quingdao is an interesting place in China, because it used to be a german crowncolony called Tsingdao, founded in 1874. The germans had signed a treaty for 99 years with China like Great Britain did for Hongkong, but with the beginning of WW I this part of China was occupied by the Japanese troops and the treaty was suspended.
So even though the germans had to leave in 1914 you will still find a lot of german traces and influences nowadays, including the famous brewery, a german bakery, a lot of german inscriptions and lots of houses built in the style of german architecture.

Hi, Michael! ~ Nice to know about the history of that place... Kolonialwaren damals... Vielen Dank für Deine Seite! Alles Gute weiterhin!

I haven't also heard about this German Honkong! Yes it was very touching for you to see the "German touchings" there. I quite agree with your anger about the brewery instead of excursion along the city in the daytime...

A very interesting page on 'Tsingtao', a former German enclave that I've never heard much about! I usually order Tsingtao beer at authentic Chinese restaurants but never before realized the connection with Germany.
