Getting TO/AROUND: Once that you have arrived in Schwangau, AND have bought your ticket to see one or both of the famous castles you will find a bus taking you up to Marienbrücke, for a first great view on the castle of Neuschwanstein.
You simply should be aware, that the bus is not going directely to the castle of Neuschwanstein, BUT instead it takes you to a place, high ABOVE the castle, close to the bridge (Marienbrücke). There you may take a great picture of the castle.
From Marienbruecke there is a really STEEP path going down to the castle, and you might regret, that you did not walk directely from Hohenschwangau to the castle.
The fares of the bus were in 2006 :
    1,80 €uro for uphill, 1 euros for down-hill
    2,60 €uro for the return-ticket.
(And going BACK by bus would mean that you first walk up the steep path again, instead of walking down smoothly within 20 minutes !)

    Transportation: by train to Fuessen
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: The train-station of Fuessen is at a slow side-line with only a few connections and from Munich to Fuessen and finally by bus from Fuessen to Schwangau will take at least 3 hours and is 20,50 euros one way, 42,- return !
There is an early train at 7:51a.m. and you will be in Schwangau not before 10:44, at that time it might be hard to get any tickets for Neuschwanstein, at a day, when there are plenty of tourists in high season.
Better check out the time-table in advance !
April - Sept. the castle is open 08.30 a.m.-05.30 p.m.
    Oct.-march 10.00 a.m. - 04.00 p.m.

It might be best to hire a car, so you may also see some of the sights on your way to Fuessen and in the surrounding valleys :
    Wieskirche - Rottenbuch - Ettal - Oberammergau - Linderhof - Mittenwald - Garmisch...

Transportation: by horse-carriage to both castles
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: Take the horse-carriage to Hohenschwagau-castle , when you have time enough and want to save your powers for the rest of the day. Walking uphill will be even a bit faster, but it might take your breath away, when you have to rush uphill in order to catch your tour. Walking-time uphill over the small path to the castle will be around 10-15 minutes, the horse-carriages will take another way and might need a bit longer and of course they would always try to fill up the carriage, before they start, while you could run uphill right away, after you have bought your ticket.
The prices for the horse-carriages to Hohenschwangau :
3,50 Euros uphill and 1,50 euros downhill
    Horse carriages to Neuschwanstein Castle
are 5.00 euros uphill and 2,50 euros downhill
pay directely at the carriage !
online-reservation of carriages is NOT possible !!
