Off The Beaten Path: the kitchen of Theodor Hirneis

The castle-kitchen of Hohenschwangau is one of the few places, where photography is no problem at all, and though it looks a bit strange with that puppet of a cook, it is the authentic kitchen of the palace, where mad king Ludwig II spent his childhood and where Theodor Hirneis started as apprentice-cook and ended as "Hofkoch" of King Ludwig II. After the death of Ludwig II Theodor Hirneis wrote several books about his time at the royal bavarian court "Theodor Hirneis oder wie man ehemaliger Hofkoch wird" is a TV-film, starring Walter Sedelmayer as Th. Hirneis, and I may recommend it highly to all german-speaking people beeing interested in King Ludwig II. I remember how he explained, that the king all of a sudden had the idea to go to a hidden place somewhere in the mountains and his employees had to get there some time ahead, simply in order to plant some nice natural flowers in an area, where they could never grow in reality, but they could survive for a few hours there and that was enough for the King... The old kitchen of Hohenschwangau castle is opposite of the main castle, in the same building as the shop.

Off The Beaten Path: "Jugend" for the best view of Hohenschwangau

"Jugend" (youth) is a quite strange name for a view-point and I have no idea, where it came from. In any case "Jugend" is a great place, about 200 meters from the exit of castle Neuschwanstein, where you may take a look down to the lakes, the surrounding mountains and the castle of Hohenschwangau, where "mad" King Ludwig II spent his youth. Huge trees add a lot to the atmosphere there, even when the weather is not really perfect, like I had a foggy and rainy day unfortunately. You will find "Jugend" on your way to the castle, when you step down from Marienbruecke. When you choose to skip the bus and you walk up from Schwangau, you will have to pass by Neuschwanstein and walk another 200 meters to get to that great viewpoint.

Marienbrücke is an iron bridge over a gorge and a waterfall in a distance of about 300 meters from Neuschwanstein and it is for sure the very best place to take a pic of the famous castle. Marienbruecke is the place, where the bus from Schwangau will take you, and you simply have to walk on 200 meters. On my 1st picture you may see Marienbruecke, as it looks from one of the windows of the castle, and so you may also see the small alpine-river underneath, falling down the "Pöllatschlucht" ( a gorge )

Off The Beaten Path: Wieskirche - on your way from Munich to Fuessen

Wies is a tiny village of just a few farmhouses and a church that is extremely oversized for these few houses. When you drive in a day-excursion by car from Munich to Fuessen and Neuschwanstein, you will pass by this interesting church with its ornate baroque interior, just 7 km east of Steingaden you have to leave the road to Fuessen, follow the signs for "Wies", it is just a few hundred meters from the main road.. Wies-Kirche is a very popular pilgrim-church in Bavaria and it started with a miracle in 1740 and since then lots of pilgrims come to this lovely church. On my 2nd picture : "Knoking on heaven's door " is one of the fresco-themes on the ceiling of Wies-kirche. All of the church is painted in that great style, and the high windows add a lot to the atmoshere, when the sun shines in. Wies and its church will need a minimum-stay of maybe 30 minutes - it will be an impression, you will never forget !

Off The Beaten Path: Ettal - a great halfday-excursion from Fuessen

Ettal is a lovely monastery east of Fuessen and you will pass by it when you make a day-excursion to Linderhof palace, Oberammergau or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Ettal monastery was founded in 1330 and the first part of it was finished already in 1370. The building was quite unusual for the gothic times, as the church was built almost round, with 12 edges and a central column holding the dome. That central column was taken away during the re-construction in 1724, when the church got its Baroque fassade and dome, the way it looks today. The dome is really breath-taking with all its great paintings and a large chandelier. Lots of windows around the dome will let in enough light into the church, so photography is possible almost without any problem. You may enter the monastery-church freely and without restrictions during the day, photography without flash is no problem ! Still today Kloster Ettal is not only a monastery, but also a boarding-school, a hotel, brewery, butchery, and liquor-production.... so there are a lot of good reasons for a stop-over !

Alatsee / Alat See is a tiny alpine lake close to Füssen and a wonderful and scenic place to escape the daily tourist-steams of Fuessen. The water of Alatsee is also very special : on the top it is crystall clear and a tiny river is flowing through it, BUT in a depth of about 10 meters the water gets a different density and you will find plenty of old trunks of trees and leaves there. Below these trees you cannot see anything in the water, but the lake has a depth of several hundred meter at certain places. I was working in the hotel there in 1990, and at that time Prof. Fricke came with his submarine to search for relicts of WW II and Nazi-treasures. All he found was lots of fake British Pounds, printed by the Nazis and finally thrown into the lake at the end of the war.

St.Koloman is a popular pilgrim-church, about 8km east of the city of Fuessen and rather close to Schloss Neuschwanstein. You will pass by this church, when driving to Neuschwanstein from Munich, and the church will be situated directely at the street-crossing, where you leave the main road from Munich to Fuessen, and turn left in direction of Schwangau. The church is beautifully decorated inside and it is well worth a short stop-over, unfortunately it is open for the public only in the afternoon, and while I was in Neuschwanstein in order to take these pics it was closed. I did see its ornate interior a long time before I started with VT, at a time, when I did not take pics of everything...

Rottenbuch is another small village, that you will pass through, when you are driving from Munich to Fuessen and it is absolutely worth a short stop-over - see my pictures and read more about it on my Rottenbuch-page! Rottenbuch is a monastery-church and it was founded in 1073 A.D., the church was rebuilt in the 15th century and during the 17th century the gothic architecture was rebuilt and changed into a Baroque interior, and that is the way it still looks today. This church is overloaded with ornaments and paintings on all the walls and ceilings, and the gothic elements are to be seen only at a few places now. It is so convenient to stop by and have a short break in Rottenbuch, as the church will be open all day untill around 07.00 p.m. or even later in summertime. No entrance-fee or other restrictions except the ropes that will block sensitive parts of the church and make an alarm, when you step over them.
