Things To Do: OK, lets start with Neuschwanstein...

Neuschwanstein is mostly the one and only reason for the tourists to go to Fuessen and in fact it looks lovely already from a big distance. Schloss / castle Neuschwanstein - just about 3 Km east of Fuessen is certainly one of the most famous sights in Germany and Europe. Neuschwanstein was built by "mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria between 1869 and 1892.The castle was built on a perfect place, overlooking the whole valley and all surrounding lakes at a place that young Ludwig could see from Schloss Hohenschwangau, where he spent most of his youth. Read more about it at my Neuschwanstein-page

Things To Do: Kloster Mang
Tip Rating: |

Kloster Mang is another interesting sight of Fuessen, but most of the tourists will simply over-see it. The monastery Mang dates back to the medieval times and was finally rebuilt in Baroque style. Take a few minutes and have a look inside that great monastery with its ornate decorations. There is no entrence-fee and no other restriction for the tourists except not to disturb a church-service. This church is really worth a few minutes and enjoy the great paintings and ornaments.

Directions: The Mang monastery was built close to the castle of Fuessen, just a few hundred meters off the river.

Things To Do: The castle of Fuessen

Fuessen castle is mainly used by the town's administration nowadays, but you may walk inside that lovely inner-court and admire the interesting facade freely and without restrictions. I don't remember any gates that might be locked at night, so you may easily leave the sight-seeing in this part of Fuessen for the end of the day, when the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are closed already. Schloss Fuessen is quite a large area with a few side-courts and some entrance-gates and it would be a pity to miss it, when you come to Fuessen.

Things To Do: the townhall & a great fresco

The townhall of Fuessen is also quite interesting for the tourists, not only for a nice innercourt, but mainly the hall with great frescos that you may find when entering the big gate from the pedestrian area and walking straight ahead and enter the building there. Dont hesitate to step in, the whole building is used for administration-purposes and tourists are welcome there as well.

Directions: Take a look at my 2nd pic, there is the entrance at the right, you step in there, walk to the opposite entrance inside the innercourt and that is where you will find these great frescos !

Things To Do: Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche
Tip Rating: |

Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche dates back to the year 1748 and has an ornate and interesting baroque interior. It was built by Franz Karl Fischer in the years 1748-49. The fresco at the ceiling is quite interesting, showing the 4 continents Europe, Asia, Africa and America at each corner. In the centre : the 7 sacraments (see my 4th picture) Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche was built as the church for a hospital and you may enter it freely and without restrictions during the day !

Directions: Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche is just a few meters from the townhall of Fuessen, and clse to the river.

Things To Do: Hohenschwangau is the better choice
Tip Rating: |
Schloss Hohenschwangau is a lot more interesting and a lot more authentic than Neuschwanstein, because it was in Hohenschwangau palace, where little "mad" king Ludwig II spent most of his childhood, and where the tapestries and the old furniture influenced him a lot in the way he expected his dream-castle Neuschwanstein to be. He had a lonely childhood, well guarded by some home-teachers and surrounded by various scenes of the Nibelungen-legends and heroic scenes of german history, that you may still see at the tapestries in Hohenschwangau palace. The castle was built for Maximilian II in 1832-1836., and the king actually lived there with his family and his son Ludwig II. Moritz von Schwind and Wilhelm Lindenschmitt made the great frescoes inside the castle. You may visit the castle only with a guided tour, that will take about 30 minutes, and also for this castle you have to buy the tickets down at the main counter in the village of Schwangau. You may buy a combination-ticket for both castles for 15,- € (that was the price in 2005) The tour through Hohenschwangau will always be FIRST ! ( as it is very close to the ticket-box)

Directions: Hohenschwangau is opposite of Neuschwanstein palace, in a distance of about 1000 meters. Drive in direction SCHWANGAU, search for a parking and walk for the last few hundred meters or take a horse-carriage !

Things To Do: Alte Stadtapotheke
Tip Rating: |
Alte Stadtapotheke is maybe the most beautiful facade in the city of Füssen. You will find it in the pedestrian area, and it is also worth to take a look inside, because you will see many things that are typical for an old pharmacy : see what kind of things are hanging down from the ceiling : in former times such old animal-bones were used in order to create remedies, or at least it was pretended that these rare items were needed for the secret recepees of their remedies. The design of the facade of the 17th century follows similar facades in Italy and gives you the feeling to see real stones and structures - but in fact the walls are completely flat. The building was always used as a pharmacy and has also a great wooden furniture inside !

Things To Do: Linderhof - a good alternative for fans of Ludwig
Tip Rating: |
Linderhof is in my personal opinion the best of "mad" Ludwig's palaces , because it is less crowded than the others and Linderhof is also the ONLY palace of Ludwig II, where you may take pics inside the palace ! Linderhof was the only castle, that "mad" King Ludwig II was able to finish and live there - at least for some time. Richard Wagner was a close friend of King Ludwig II, and very often he spent some time with the king in Linderhof and used to play that piano inside one of the saloons. You will be really impressed by the ornaments covering all the walls and ceilings of the castle. Mostly it is a simply a wooden structure, that carries the paintings and the ornaments that were finally just covered with gold. According to the guide, the total of gold, used for one of the larger rooms was 4 Kilo
Your ticket will cost 6,- € and is valid ONLY for the time indicated - so get to the castle-entrance in time or you miss the guided tour and the ticket is lost ! Photography is allowed also inside the palace, BUT Only without tripod, no flash and no video !!

Directions: In a straight line Linderhof palace is just about 15km from Fuessen, in reality you have to drive about 50 km in order to get there - take the road #23 towards Garmisch Partenkirchen !

Fuessen has an interesting town-centre with plenty of great buildings in traditional architecture. There is a pedestrian area, where you will find the most beautiful buildings, just start at the train-station, get across the street and you are in the historic centre of Fuessen. When you enlarge my 1st picture you will see a knight standing there in his iron armoutage in front of Gasthof Krone.
