The holy island of Miyajima has been worshipped as a god since more than 1400 years. In the year 593 the origins of Itsukushima Shrine was built and many other shrines and temples followed and nowadays Miyajima even became a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. The buildings of Itsukushima Shrine, that you see nowadys were constructed in 1168.

    I did not have enough time for this island, it will be a good escuse to go back. As for the man standing in front of the temple, are we sure it wasn't a statue?

    Shame that you didn't have time to climb Mt. Misen! It's fantastic up there. I went one way up and down another path. Miyajima is a magic place despite the masses of visitors.

    Interesting tips here about how they prevent bad ghosts from entering the temples, and how they put a fish symbol at the top to keep the temple from burning down.

    yes, it seems that is better to visit the place in winter with high water that to have the best view of the Gate
