Burg Eltz makes a perfect daytrip from Koblenz, maybe in combination with Muenster-Maifeld and Ediger Eller. Burg Eltz is one of the very few castles in Germany that is owned by the same family for already much more than 800 years now. The castle was built on an absulutely perfect place for strategic reasons, on top of a steep rock , that is almost totally surrounded by a small river and only a narrow path that was easy to defend is leading to the castle-entrance. A draw-bridge was used to defend it in medieval times. The eldest part of the castle dates back to the 12th century, and more and more "modern" parts were added in the later centuries step by step, and so the castle as it looks today is more like a mosaique of different architectural styles. The castle-courts may be visited freely, but for a tour through the ancient living-rooms of the " Edlen Herren von Burg Eltz" with plenty of works of art and great furniture, you have to pay a fee of 6 Euros . NO photograpy is allowed during the guided tour !! Parking your car is 1,50 Euros for the whole day read more about it on my Eltz-page !

Directions: When you drive the Mosel-valley, you will see plenty of sign-posts for the 2 main parkings for Burg Eltz.

Deutsches Eck is a place of history and also the place, where the river Mosel (on the right of my picture) flows into the river Rhine and on my main picture I was looking out through the arcades inside the large monument at Deutsches Eck, read more about this monument in my next tip ! This place is a Must, when you are in Koblenz, it is also a nice walk along the banks of both rivers with plenty of restaurants, cafes and benches to relax. Opposite of Deutsches Eck you may see Festung Ehrenbreitenstein at the river Rhine / Rhein and a nice camping-site at the other bank of the river Mosel / Moselle

Festung Ehrenbreitenstein was first mentioned in the history-books in the year 1000. In 1020 it became a posession of the prince-bishops of Trier. Step by step the castle was made larger and stronger, in 1524 a cannon named "Greif" with 9 tons was added, in 1493 the castle even had its own monastery, but only for a shorter time. During the 30 years-war Ehrenbreitenstein was widely destroyed in 1636 Festung Ehrenbreitenstein is open for visitors all year long and you may visit it on your own daily from April till October you may get guided tours every full hour from 10.00a.m. - 05.00p.m. the entrance-fee is moderate : 1,10 euros Tel. Don't miss St. Castor's Church, it is the oldest church of Koblenz dating back to the year 836. From outside you may still see the romanic architecture of this impressive church the interior had several "face liftings" since then with gothic vaults and baroque paintings and sculptures. Enlarge my extra-photographs in order to get an impression of the beautiful interior ! During the day you may visit St. Castor's church freely and without restrictions !

Liebfrauenkirche / The Church of Our Lady is maybe the most beautiful church of Koblenz and it was built in the very centre of town and at the highest point of the town-centre, so it was safe from the regular floods of the rivers Rhine and Mosel. Liebfrauenkirche dates back to the 12th century. French troops had destroyed it like plenty of other buildings in the Rhine-valley, but it was rebuilt and nowadays it has a great gothic interior with white walls beautifully decorated by red bricks. From the outside you may see the great onion-towers that were added in baroque times.

Schaengel / Schaengelchen is the name of this little boy, that you may see standing on a fountain, spitting water at everbody, coming too close or at the wrong time... The expression dates back to the time, when Koblenz belonged to France ( 1794-1814), when plenty of boys got the name JEAN, but the local people could not pronounce it correctely and called them SCHANG. Nowadays Schaengelchen is a must, when visiting Koblenz and no tourguide will ever skip it. Simply watch it from a distance before you get any closer, or take a look at the pavement and see, where it is wet, so you will not stand at the wrong place, when Schaengel spits again...

The Jesuits founded their monastery and school at 1580 at Jesuitenplatz, but that moastery is used as the townhall of Koblenz since 1895 and still nowadays. I did not go inside, but the baroque stair-case is worth seeing. The jesuit-church was destroyed in WW II and only the facade was restored, that you may see on my 3rd picture. Jesuitenplatz is surrounded by plenty of great buildings with interesting architecture and Professor Johannes Mueller, a famous son of Koblenz is overlooking all the people in the street-cafes and all of the tourists walking to Schaengelchen, the spitting boy, in another court just behind Jesuitenplatz... Johannes Mueller (1801-1858) became professor of physiology at the university of Berlin and all of Koblenz is still proud of him !

The column is 10 meters high and was created by Juergen Webers, showing 200 years of history from the first settlers in roman times till today. Enlarge my pictures and some of the great details ! Historiensäule am Görresplatz was made in 1992.

Altes Regierungsgebaeude is the name of this impressive building dating back to the year 1905 and it was built for the governement of the county just a few hundred meters from Deutsches Eck, where the rivers Mosel and Rhine are mmeting.. I think this impressive building rather looks like an old castle and it is facing the waterfront at the river Rhine.

Ludwig Kunst-Museum is an interesting museum showing mainly french works of art. This museum is just a few meters from St. Castors Church and not far from Deutsches Eck, and the building dates back to the 12th century and was originally built as the building for the "Deutschorden" (german knights-order), that was founded during the times of the crusades in order to supply and organize them. This is were the nearby "Deutsches Eck" (german corner) got its name from, so this has nothing to do with the german emperor's monument there.
