  • Koenigssee is Bavaria's remotest lake, beeing surrounded almost from all sides by high mountains. Only in Schoenau am Koengissee there is a small part of the lake that is accessible for cars and hikers.
the lake is 603 meters above sea-level and it has a length of 7,7 km, a maximum width of 1,2 km and a maximum depth is 190 meters.
Shipping is possible there almost all of the year, although the lake is mostly too cold in summer to swim there.
Many of the mountains surrounding the lake are at the same time the border to Austria, BUT no access is possible there, except for well-experienced hikers and mountain-climbers.

  • Schoenau am Koenigssee is a well-known tourist-resort and the only place to start cruising the Koenigsee. Therefore almost all of the village lives on tourists since several centuries and you may see plenty of great buildings with the lovely bavarian architecture.
The main village is Car-free except for the locals and the guests who have booked in the hotels in the village. So the main road through Schoenau is mostly a pedestrian-zone and one shop after the other is waiting for customers, a lot of restaurants, kiosks etc.
Once that you came to the lake, take a walk to the left or to the right, for some great hikes and you will see that most tourists will avoid to take these paths, so it is quite enjoyable there. Turn to the right for the covered bridge (Seeklause) and the Ice-canal or turn left for the Malerwinkel.

    Things To Do: Seeklause
  • Tip Rating:
  • Seeklause is the name of the covered bridge that you may see at the north-end of Koenigssee, where the lake ends with a small river. Seeklause used to be a fence to regulate the water-level of the lake and also in order to collect the giant trees that were needed for the production of salt in the nearby mines. These trees were taken out of the woods around Koenigssee, thrown into the lake and they all gathered at the Seeklause, where they were cut into smaller pieces and then thrown again into the water of the small river in order to be taken to Berchtesgaden and collected there again by a similar fence.
The Seeklause that you may see today dates back to 1787, but there used to be another one already in former times.

    Things To Do: pilgrim-church St.Bartholomae

  • The pilgrim-church St.Bartholomae is a well-known sight and you may find its pictures all over Bavaria and Germany in many books and postcards. Maybe it is because of the scenic place of that church in front of the high mountain-scenery.
The first church at this place dates back to the year 1134, in 1698 the lovely towers with the onion-tops were added. St. Bartholomae is the saint for the alpine farmers and shepherds and so this place became a quite popular place for the local farmers.
The church looks nice from inside, but not very special, so in case that it is locked, while you are there, you did not miss a lot. The main attraction is in my opinion its lovely white facade with the red onion-towers and the great mountain-scenery behind of it !
There is NO regular church-service in St.Bartholomae !!!

    Things To Do: Malerwinkel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Malerwinkel is always the most scenic place of a village, exactely there, where all of the painters will go in order to paint the best view of a landscape. Schoenau am Koenigssee also has such a place, and you will pass by it with the ships, when starting a cruise on Koenigssee. Take a look at the left, when you pass by the small island on my last picture !
Walking-time to Malerwinkel is about 30 minutes, an easy path, at first along the lake, later-on through the woods.
There is also a hotel at Malerwinkel !
