Off The Beaten Path: Burg Trausnitz - die Wunderkammer

The "Wunderkammer" ( chamber of miracles) is an interesting museum showing things that might be quite common nowadays, but in medieval times they were quite exotic, like the crocodile on my picture. Several rooms and vitrines are full of souvenirs from places far away, like a box made of of a Seychell-nut ( see a pic in my travelogue) , the armours of giant turtles, precious clocks etc. The museum consists of 4 large rooms on 2 different floors. This museum is also equipped with a lift for handicapped people, while the rest of the castle does NOT have a lift.

Off The Beaten Path: Georgskapelle - the chapel of Burg Trausnitz

Goergskapelle is the name of the chapel of Burg Trausnitz and it looks really great with its quite unique construction of 2 levels. On top you have another small altar and the giant cross and on this level there is also an extra room of the prince, while the other people attended the church-service from the lower level that looks a lot more like an ordinary church. There are more pics of the chapel in my travelogue !!

Off The Beaten Path: Narrentreppe - (stairs of fools)

Narrentreppe - (stairs of fools) is a great staircase inside the castle of Trausnitz and it shows scenes and characters of the "Commedia dell Arte". These frescos with the persons in life-size were made in 1578 by Paduano. Unfortunately you cannot walk these stairs, but may just look at them from a distance.

Off The Beaten Path: Halle der Illusionen - hall of illusions

Halle der Illusionen (hall of illusions) is another highlight, when you take the tour through castle high above the city of Landshut. This wall is completely flat, but by the way it is painted with fine fresos you get the feeling to see 3 dimensional decorations, paintings, doors etc. You have to approach quite close in order to be sure, all of these things are simply painted there. I may imagine that this effect was a even a lot better back in 1600 A.D., when the colors were still bright and fresh.

Off The Beaten Path: Thekla Kapelle - on your way to the castle
Tip Rating: |

Alte Bergstrasse in the north of the city of Landshut is the best way to step up to the castle Trausnitz and at the place, where you leave the ordinary street and continue with hundreds of steps you may see a small church with a really beautiful interior : Thekla Kapelle dates back to the year 1426 and is a neo-gothic construction outside. Inside it was redecorated in baroque-style by Wilhelm von Neufraunhofen in 1759. The church-door is open during the day and you may look through an iron-fence .

Off The Beaten Path: a tiny remain of the medieval townwall
Tip Rating: |

There is a small rest of the medieval townwall to be seen in Innere Muenchner Strasse, on the right when you walk from St.Martin cathedral towards the Zeughaus. On my picture you see it even decorated like all other buildings are decorated with flags during the "Landshuter Hochzeit". There is a restaurant beneath this wall and you may obviously step up the wall through this restaurant.

Off The Beaten Path: giant gobelins in Burg Trausnitz

Tip Rating: |

In Burg Trausnitz you may see giant gobelins as a wall-decoration in many of the big halls. Most of these gobelins show historical events of the royal Wittelsbacher family and they are in a quite good condition, they seem to have been restored recently.

Take a look at the lovely bay-window of the townhall, it is one of the last gothic remains that you may see on the facade and it has great decorations in the sandstone.

Off The Beaten Path: Till Eulenspiegel on a fountain in Altstadt
Tip Rating: |
Till Eulenspiegel is a historic character of Germany (born 1300 and died in 1350) He was a simple man, a singer and commedian, who was able to make fun about everyday life and also about kings and noble people and he had a certain way to do it,that he was never harmed by the kings he made fun about. You may see him standing on top of a fountain in Altstadt and he holds a mirror in one hand - a symbol for showing the behaviour of the kings in a mirror.
