  • The townhall of Landshut consists of 3 different gothic buildings, that were combined by a neo-gothic facade in 1861. The most precious room of the townhall is the Rathausprunksaal , the ornate audience-hall where the bride and the groom of the historic wedding of 1475 had their first dance togeather. In 1880 that room was decorated with scenes from that historic wedding and it is still used for special festivities, concerts and theatre-performances. The Fest & Tanzspiel is performed there during the Landshuter Hochzeit.
You may visit this Prunksaal beteen 02.00 and 0.00p.m.

    Things To Do: St.Martin & the world's highest brick-tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • St.Martin is the biggest church in Landshut and it has the world's highest spire, made of bricks (131 meters). The church dates back to 1389 and has a main altar made of sandstone in 1424, a pulpit made of stone and various interesting tombs inside the church and at its outside-wall.
I liked most the great gothic entrance-gates with beautiful sculptures and ornaments.

guided tours of St. Martin are available daily

October till March daily 07.30a.m. till 05.00p.m.

Things To Do: Altstadt - a street full of great gothic buildings

  • Altstadt is normally the german expression for the old centre of any town, BUT in Landshut it is the name of the main street between the cathedral of St.Martin and Heiliggeistkirche. This street is full of great late-gothic buildings, that mostly have a special type of facade with fake towers and many fancy varieties. That street is a pedestrian zone today and one of the places used for the wedding parade of the Landshuter Hochzeit von 1475.

Things To Do: the giant gates of St.Martin cathedral

  • Take a closer look at the giant gates of St.Martin cathedral : In this cathedral the original wedding-ceremony took place in 1475 and the gates have a lot of nice decorations and sandstone-sculptures, a part of them is even colored. During Landhuter Hochzeit there are regular music-performances in front of the church. This is the main entrance towards "Altstadt" - don't mioss the other 2 gothic gates of the cathedral.

  • During the 16th century this building was used as a place to meet for the local governement. This fancy freso at the facade was made in 1599 by Georg Knauf, after a concept by Hans Pachmayr. The persons you may see on the facade are the most important princes of the Wittelsbacher-family and symbols of the 4 world-empires.
A few centuries later this building became the post-office and so it is still named "Alte Post" today.

Things To Do: Kronprinz - dating back to 1460
  • Tip Rating:

  • Kronprinz in Landshut
  • by globetrott
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • "Kronprinz" ( crown-prince) is the name of anotherv interesting building in the centre of Landshut:
It dates back to the year 1460 and was built for the chancellor of the duke, Dr.Martin Mair. Later it became the house of Herzog (duke) Georg der Reiche and some decades later it was used of the local governement
The classicistic facade that you may still see today dates back to 1780 and in order to commemorate the time when Herzog Ludwig I was in Landshut to study in 1803, the building got the name "Kronprinz" since 1815.
Enlarge the picture and see the great relief with the coat of arms !

  • The "Residenz" of Landshut is considdered to be the first renaissance-palace north of the alps and it was built in the year 1536 for Herzog Ludwig X.
The building consists of 2 different parts : One part is facing the Altstadt and got a new facade in 1789 - it does not look very special, when you walk through the town of Landshut,
The other part is the "Italian building" with the lovely arcades in the innercourt that you may see on my picture, and the great arcade that you may see on my next tip !
The Residenz is also used for performances during "Landshuter Hochzeit"

  • The Italian Building of the Residenz has a really nice arcade just opposite of the entrance, when you get into the innercourt of the Residenz. Do NOT hesitate to walk there, even when the stage of the "Landshuter Hochzeit" is there - these arcades are really great with ornate decorations and stucco works.
The Residenz is open for visitors ONLY by a guided tour !
    From April 1st till September 30th : 09.00a.m.- 06.00p.m.
    From October 1st till March 31st : 10.00a.m.- 04.00p.m.
Last tour is 30minutes befor closing time

    Things To Do: Pappenberger Haus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Landshut - Pappenberger Haus / Altstadt 81
  • Pappenberger Haus / Altstadt 81
  • by globetrott
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Pappenberger Haus is another interesting building with a unique facade. The building - opposite of the townhall - was built in the year 1405 and is an excellent excample for a gothic house of a wealthy citicen. The name comes from family Pappenberger, who liven in that building between 1878 and 1909.
The facade that you see today dates back to the 17th century and it looks quite funny with all of these fake towers, that are simply a nice decoration.

Michael, excellent and very comprehensive page about Landshut, which I passed at the beginning of January by car. The city really seems to be well worth a closer look, especially when the sun is shining.
