Off The Beaten Path: Faulhorn - with a great restaurant & hotel

Faulhorn was the very first alpine-hotel built in Switzerland and the only way to get there is by hiking from Schnigge Platte, from First or Axalp. The prices in the restaurant and the simple hotel are quite reasonable, when you considder, that all goods have to be taken up there "the hard way" When intending to spend the night in the hotel - make sure you reserve in advance !!

Off The Beaten Path: Schynigge Platte

Schynigge Platte is in a distance of a fullday-hike from Grindelwald. At first you have to take the cablecar to First, walk towards the Faulhorn ( that part is quite steep and exhausting) and follow the path to Weberhuette and Schynigge Platte. The total hike from First is about 6 hours and somehow I think it is better to go up at Schyniggeplatte from Wilderswil (next to Interlaken) and walk to First. Just be careful, the last cablecar from First is at 05.00p.m., the last train from Schynigge Platte is normally at 06.00p.m.

Off The Beaten Path: Hike from Grindelwald to Faulhorn & Axalp

Axalp is a mountain-terrace high above Brienzersee, opposite of Brienz, and you may first take the cablecar from Grindelwald to First and start hiking from there to Faulhorn and Axalp - a total walkingtime of 5 hours : the steepest part of that mountain-path is certainly the path between Bachalpsee and Faulhorn, the rest is rather smooth. the only restaurants along the way are in First, Faulhorn Hotel and then again Axalp, where 2 hotels are waiting for you. Choose the one on my picture and drink a glass "Kaffee fertig" ... ...and be aware of the fact, that THIS hotel was the one where I started my hotel-carreer in 1972, as a young student from Austria, who was searching for a job in Switzerland... From Axalp you may walk down to Giessbach and Brienz wihin 4-5 hours or you take the public bus to Brienz !

Off The Beaten Path: Bort - at halfway to First

Bort is the middle-station of the First cablecar in a height of 1570 meters above sea-level. Around of the station of Bort you will find some restaurants and a few cheap mountain-hotels. You will not have to leave the cabin, BUT you may do so and go down the rest of the hill with so-called "Trotti-bikes" (scooters) at a great system of asphalted mountain-roads. Bort is also a place, where you may start to walk to Hotel Wetterhorn, where you may take the bus to Grosse Scheidegg. Helmets are compulsory, when renting such a scooter - you may rent them togeather with the "Trotti-bike"

Off The Beaten Path: Grindelwald-Grund

Grindelwald-Grund is down in the valley of Luetschine, and with a height of 943 meters it is almost 100 meters lower than the much more famous centre of Grindelwald. All trains to Kleine Scheidegg will go through Grindelwald-Grund, where you may also change to the cablecar taking you up to Maennlichen - 2227 meters above sea-level. Grindelwald-Grund has a lot less sunshine than Grindelwald, but the hotels are also a bit cheaper than in Grindelwald !!

Off The Beaten Path: Saegistalsee - high above Iseltwald

Saegistalsee is a small mountain-lake in the hight of 1937 meters above sea-level and you will pass by it when you hike from Schynigge Platte to Faulhorn - at about half of the way between Weberhuette (read more about it in my restaurant-tip!) and the Faulhorn. I could not find an official walking-path to this lake, but you may see it even from a long distance when walking to Faulhorn. Saegistalsee is high above Iseltwald, BUT the steep rocks around the lake will not allow you to walk down directely from Seagistalsee to Iseltwald.

Off The Beaten Path: Aletschglacier-Hike - 2 days off the beaten path

An Aletschglacier-Hike might be the ultimate experience during your vacation in Switzerland : You will start in Interlaken the first day and will go up and explore Jungfraujoch, before you will take a 4-hour hike to Konkordiaplatz, where you will have a short rest and picknick before you will cross a small montain-river and step up to Konkordiahuette in a height of 2850 meters above sea-level.There you will be served Cheese-fondue and spend the night in a simple dormitory. The next day you will start again after a rich breakfast-buffet, passing by impressive crevasses and a great mountain-scenery. The hike will end at Kuehboden, where you take down the cablecar and go home via Fiesch - Brig - Spiez to Interlaken. From Jungfraujoch you may see just half of the Grosser Aletsch-gletscher.Konkordia-Huette is at about the end of the glacier that you may see on my picture, close to that mountain that looks like a pyramid.Enlarge my pics and get an idea about the distances ! Anyone is able to do this hike, when beeing able to walk 4-6 hours a day. The price is 380 sfr ( 315 sfr if you have a half-tax-billet or similar) and it includes the guiding, all transports, accomodation, dinner&breakfast These tours are available between july and october every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday !! Make a reservation in advance - see the webpage below ! NEVER do such a walk without a local guide !!!
