  • Bachalpsee is one of the most beautiful mountain-lakes of the area and you will see it at many postcards and posters with the mountains reflecting in the lake like in a mirror. It is a pity that on my picture there are also a few clouds, but at least it was sunny.
From the mountain-station of the First cablecar you may hike to Bachalpsee within 45 minutes - the path is easy and rather flat, with fine gravel and no rocks - a small street, that could also be used by wheelchairs and Kinderwagen, bikes etc.
When you intend to take a picture of the reflecting mountains, you have to step down to the water-level and take the picture from there !!

    Things To Do: Eigergletscher

  • Eigergletscher is the name of the 1st station of Jungfraubahn after Kleine Scheidegg and from there you may hike a small mountain-path down to Alpiglen (2:50h) and finally to Grindelwald (+ 4:00 h)
from Eigergletscher you may also walk down to Wengen within 5 hours (or 2:20h to Wengeralp).
Just a few hundred meters past the station Eigergletscher the Jungfraubahn will go on INSIDE the mountain for the rest of the journey to Jungfraujoch, and there will be 2 more short stops of about 10 minutes each, where you may get out and take a look through giant windows.

Directions: You may hike to Eigergletscher-station within 40 minutes from Kleine Scheidegg. all of the trains of Jungfraujochbahn will stop there in both directions !

  • Eigerwand is the name of the 2nd station of the Jungfraubahn in a height of 2865 meters above sea-level. The train to Jungfraujoch will have a short stop there and the passengers may take a look through the giant windows looking down on Grindelwald and the Eiger-glacier. The total stop will take around 10 minutes, and you will have enough time to take a look - the conductors will make sure, nobody is left back there...
When looking out of the window, you may also see a few iron-fixtures next to one of the windows, obviously they were left back by someone, who climbed up the Eiger there.
At this station you may also powder your nose...

Things To Do: Eismeer - a station in a height of 3160 meters
  • Tip Rating:
  • EISMEER is the name of the 3rd station of the Jungfraujoch-bahn and it is the one with the most interesting view in my opinion, because you may see the permanent glaciers of the Eiger from a short distance, standing inside the mountain, just looking out through 2 giant windows.
There is no ordinary path leading to this glaciers and only extreme mountain-climbers will ever get into that area with a height of about 3000 meters above sea-level.
You will stop also at this station for about 10 minutes, you may get outside of the train in order to take pics or talk to a man about a horse...

Directions: To Eismeer (that means "ocean of ice") you may ONLY go by the Jungfraubahn. The trains will stop there ONLY when going upwards !!

  • The Jungfraubahn takes you up to Jungfraujoch, the highest train-station in Europe - it is also called "Top of Europe" This train is the most expensive in Switzerland and going up there makes ONLY sense in perfect weather-conditions !! The trainstation is built inside the mountain and so the trains may run all year long.
From the station you may walk through various tunnels to the points of interest :
1)The Sphinx-viewpoint in a height of 3571 meters. There is a cocktail-lounge and a shop for clocks and a terrace for visitors around all of the building.
    2)The Ice-palace with various ice-sculptures
3)a small museum of the Jungfraubahn
    4)various restaurants, gift-shops and an e-mail-terminal
5)the gate to the glacier, where you may hike to Moenchsjochhuette, go skiing or ride with the sledge-dogs.

Things To Do: Eiger - Nordwand
  • Tip Rating:
  • Grindelwald - sorry, the real Nordwand is in the clouds
  • sorry, the real Nordwand is in the

  • The Eiger - Nordwand is certainly the most famous climbing-area in the alps and for several centuries people could not believe this side of the mountain may ever be conquered. But finally in 1938 2 alpinists from Austria : Heinrich Harrer and Kasparek, and 2 germans , Heckmair and Voerg succeded and conquered the Eiger-Nordwand. .There are 4 different ways to climb up the Eiger-Nordwand and when you look at Eiger from Kl.Scheidegg it is almost unbelievable, that anyone is able to climb it up there within one single day. On a map you may see the various paths to get to the peak of Eiger, with a height of 3870 meters above sea-level.
When hiking downhill the "Eiger-Trail" from the station "Eigergletscher" you will pass by the places, where the mountain-climbers start.
    --- --- --- --- --- ---

b.t.w. Heinrich Harrer spent the time of WW II in Tibet, educating todays Dalai Lama, when he was a child. The movie "7 years in Tibet" with Brad Pitt tells that story in "Hollywood-style".
Heinrich Harrer is also the author of the book "Kampf um den Eiger" - see a scan of the book-title as my last picture - scanned and forwarded as a courtesy by my brother Leo (globerover), who has the book in his library and is also the better expert about these stories than me - I rather go to these places BUT read less about them :-))

Things To Do: First - a great area for hiking
  • Tip Rating:
  • Grindelwald - along the path to Schynigge Platte
  • along the path to Schynigge Platte

  • First is a mountain in the north of Grindelwald and it is a perfect place to start alpine-hikes of all levels - easy till experienced. Bachalpsee is the first sight you will get to - within about 50 minutes, an easy and comfortable hike almost without any uphill-passages. From Bachalpsee you may walk to Faulhorn, BUT be prepared : the first part is really steep and exhausting but the view from Faulhorn is really spectacular and the restaurant and hotel there had been the very first alpine-hotel in Switzerland.
The hike from First to Schynigge Platte will take the whole day and needs some hiking-experience.
    An ordinary ticket Grindelwald-First-Grindelwald is 50 sfr/ 35 Euro !

  • The Sphinx Observatory is located on top of a small, seperate mountain on Jungfraujoch and you may go there through a tunnel and by a lift from the train-station. The main-part of the Sphinx is used by scientists but tourists may get outside of the building, at a terrace that faces all sides of the building and it is made by a steel-grate, so the snow will fall down and walking there will be rather safe thoughout the year. Plenty of birds will be waiting to be fed there and inside the Sphinx you will find a small cocktail-lounge and a shop for precious Swiss watches.

    Things To Do: Jungfrau-Plateau
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Jungfrau-Plateau is another place, where you may get outside and have a great view of the surrounding mountains and the Gr. Aletschgletscher. The Plateau is a rather flat area, BUT it is also quite windy there and so it is icy and quite slippery even during the summer. There is the swiss flag in the centre and a fence is made by ropes that mark the area, that you are allowed to walk. That rope-fence is your only chance to get some hold, when walking - it might make sense to have good mountain-boots and/or walking-sticks there !
I was there end of october, in great sunshine and a part of the snow was soft, at certain places it was really icy and dangerous !

    Things To Do: The Ice-palace

  • Grindelwald - Eis-Palast / Ice Palace on Jungfraujoch
  • Eis-Palast / Ice Palace on
  • Jungfraujoch
  • by globetrott , 3 more photos

  • Eis-Palast / Ice Palace is a big area inside the mountain, where all of the halls and corridors are made by solid ice. You may see various sculptures made of ice and you have to be careful, when walking, but there are haindrails and somehow it was less slippery than at the Jungfrau-Plateau.
This part of the Jungfraujoch-attractions was not really so very special in my opinion, BUT it might make sense to go there on a day, when it is storming and too cold in order to get outside.
You will also see that most people skip that part of Jungfraujoch, but it might be a nice experience for children !
