Staubachfall seen from the train to Wengen
Staubachfall is one of the main attractions of Lauterbrunnen and the best about it is : You may see it for free, day and night, in only a short distance from the train-station, you may even walk there, when you may spare 20-30 minutes between 2 connecting trains. The water of Staubachfall falls down more than 300 meters and it is even illuminated at night.
You may see this waterfall best, when you get down the cable-car from Muerren or from the train to Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg - like seen on my main picture.
Next to the waterfalls is a large parking ( and of course you have to pay there !) and you may walk to the falls free of charge, BUT the Staubachfalls certainly look best from a big distance !!
I prefer the mysteries of nature
is closed now,maybe for-ever !!
I leave the infos here, so you know,
what it was all about
when you pass by that strange building
in the east of Interlaken

Mystery World in Interlaken might be a place to visit, while the weather is not really good enough for hiking: Decide for yourself, wether "Mystery World" is a place that you would like to go or not . The entrance-fee is 48 sfr - I personally rather go to one of the mountains around Muerren instead ! maybe it makes sense to go there on a rainy day...
I have not been inside Mystery World, simply because I think that Erich von Daeniken has funny theories without any historic fact behind of them. He still believes in exterritorical visits even in places, where the corn-fields had certain patterns a few years ago, and finally science found out that this was just a joke by some people.... and while the newspapers kept telling us , that human beeing never would find a way to make such giant patterns, 2 elderly men finally revealed that they could be done by a long rope that was turned around the centre like a pair of compasses and walking around without leaving any traces was easy by stilts....
BUT there seems to be a big market for such "Mysteries" today, and "Mystery World" helps a lot to fill some of the hotel-beds even out of season.
the entrance-fee is 48 sfr / 32 Euro per person
after 03.30 p.m. the entrance-fee is 28 sfr / 18 Euros !
for the carpark you pay 5 sfr per day.

the sledge in Muerren
Don't miss to see this interesting carriage that you may see inside the train-station of Muerren : It is a sledge, that was torn by horses and it was the construction of a local hotel-owner who used it in order to make it easy for his hotelguests, to get from the train-station to his hotel. This sledge was used for quite a long time, the tourists of the early 19th and 20th century had been spoilt and expected such kind of transportations at their vacation-resorts.
today you may sometimes see electro-carts like on my 2nd picture
The Truemmelbach-falls in Lauterbrunnen
The Truemmelbach-falls in Lauterbrunnen are certainly worth a half-daytrip, when you stay in Muerren. These waterfalls are quite unique and also listed as a UNESCO-World-heritage: You may take an elevator up the mountain and may see 10 glacier-waterfalls INSIDE the mountain - a long path will lead you to the most spectacular places.
These waterfalls alone are draining the Eiger, Moench & Jungfrau-glaciers at this side of the mountains - 20.000 litres of water per second will flow through these cascades, everything is wet and hazy inside the mountain, but not at all slippery, all of the tunnels are lighted well, and you might need about 1 hour to see and enjoy everything !
The entrance-fee for the Truemmelbach-falls is 10 Sfr. and includes the ride on the lift, that takes you up the mountain, BUT you still have to step up many steps in order to get to the highest point. Make sure you step down all the way to the entrance-gate, otherwise you will miss some of the best waterfalls !!
The lift just takes you to a higher place, where you may see the falls ONLY, when you are able to climb up hundreds of additional steps !!
The Truemmelbach-Falls are open April - November
daily between 09.00a.m. and 05.00p.m.
in July & August : 08.00a.m. - 06.00p.m. !!
The car-parking there is free of charge !!

Winteregg - not far from Muerren
Winteregg is a train-station , about half-way between Gruetschalp and Muerren and it makes a perfect place for a hike, because all of that area is almost flat and you always see the famous group of mountains : Eiger, Moench, Jungfrau from a quite short distance. In Winteregg you will also find a good restaurant with a great panorama-terrace !!
In order to get to Winteregg, you simply have to take the cable-car from Lauterbrunnen to Gruetschalp / Gruetschalp. There you change to the train going to Muerren, or you start hiking. Winteregg is about 50 minutes to walk from Gruetschalp.
a remore place in the Swiss alps
Gimmelwald seems to be mentioned and recommended in various guidebooks and in fact it is a really lovely, remote village, where time seems to have stood still since hundreds of years....
Gimmelwald is a great place for a daytrip from Muerren,
BUT choosing a hostel there in order to explore the Jungfrau-region
DOES ABSOLUTELY NOT MAKE SENSE !!
A simple excample :
You like to go the Kleine Scheidegg & Jungfrau from there :
The cablecar is leaving Gimmelwald every half hour to Stechelberg, the ride takes just 5 minutes, but in Stechelberg the bus to Lauterbrunnen will leave mostly only once every hour.First cable-car is around 06.15a.m., the last one is 11.10p.m.
At places like Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Stechelberg etc. you may still take a taxi afterwards, BUT for Gimmelwald there is NO road to !!
Gimmelwald is at the very end of the valley, high above Stechelberg - the only way to get there is by cable-car or hiking !! There is NO public road to Gimmelwald !!
