Haiti Cherie....

by globetrott - last update: Oct 16, 2002

I have been twice in Port of Prince/Haiti - and both times it had been the X-mas-day, Dec.24th. 1979 and 1980.

It was a strange feeling to have christmas without snow and it seemed to be even more surrealistic here in Port of Prince :

On one side, there was this cradle set up in a park around the government-building. An absolutely spotless-cleen park and these cradle-figures tall as human beeings...

...and almost nobody of Haiti's population to be seen in that park
It is such a pity, that a wonderful country like Haiti is still not living in freedom.

When I was cruising in the Caribean Sea between 1979 and 1985, there was still the dictator's regime, plenty of policemen and soldiers in the street, picking out people from the crowd and putting them on a truck and took them somewhere...

...it might be a bit better today, but certainly Haiti is not yet a free country and tourists better be careful...
This is also a page about the many souvenirs I brought home from the many stays we had in Haiti, when cruising in the Caribbean.
This wooden figure has a special story ...

Absolutely amazing pictures. What a pity it is still dangerous to go there.

Hi michael, good insight into haiti. Recently while i was in vietnam, one of the tourist in my group was from haiti, and she said her country is still in a bad situation today.

Love the paintings and the other purchases - great tip about cruising in too. Maybe one day!
