At some of our cruises we also came to Heimaey on the Westman Islands.

In January 23rd, 1973 an eruption of a new volcano began.All inhabitants of the Vestman islands had been informed about the eruption in advance, therefore nobody died by it.

I had been there first in the year 1978 - that means 5 years after the eruption - and believe it or not - the lava-rocks built by the eruption were still much hotter than the rest of the island when you touched the ground.

In 1983 when I came again, I saw that the lave-rocks were covered already with a special sort of flower/plant I have never seen before: it was green, with no leaves ,but branches covering the floor, going around every part of the rocks, covering it up almost completely.

The ship had to anchor outside the rather small port of Heimaey and our tender-boats took the passengers ashore

This is just one of my old pages of my early days of VT,maybe I should delete it...

Don't delet it yet....I need to put up mine first.....my brother was caught up in this eruption...buried his house in ashes. Way back, I landed a small plane on Surtsey, the little island that came out of the sea Cheers Erik

Must be very interesting to see. BTW - I forget my binoculars for most of my travels. Was nice to remind me, hope I bring them when I going somwhere next time
