Karl Valentin ( 1882-1948) was a commedian performing his own sketches - mostly with his partner Lisl Karstadt. He had a great DRY humor and made plenty of b&w movie-scenes of his sketches.
There is even a Karl Valentin-musäum in Munich ( and THIS is also the ONLY museum written with "Ä" in German !) There you may see important inventions by Karl Valentin such as
The toothpick for a cold winter ( coated with fir ) The musaeum is open Mo+Tue+Fr+Sat. 11.01 a.m. - 05.29 p.m. on sunday already open at 10.01 a.m.
The entrance-fee is 1,99 €uro / 1,49 € for students children under 6 and people with an age of 99 years, accompanied by their parents are FREE of charge !!!
This statue of Karl Valentin is to be found in a fountain on Viktualienmarkt

Maximilianeum was built between 1857 and 1874 and was ment to be the architectural highlight of Maximilianstrasse. Today it is used as the parliament of Bavaria, built on top of a small hill on the right shore of the river Isar. And there is a also a nice park around the building.

Off The Beaten Path: The Ruffinihouses

The Ruffinihouses are just about 200 meters from Marienplatz in the corner of Sendlingerstrasse and Rindermarkt. This interesting facade dates back to the year 1905, when the architect G. von Seidl tried to rebuild the houses in an oldfashioned style.
Rindermarkt was the square, where the weekly cow-market too place and most probably it is much older than Marienplatz.
On Rindermarkt you may also see an old watertower, dating back to the 16th century, called Löwenturm.

Off The Beaten Path: Sendlinger Tor
|
Tip Rating: |

Sendlinger Tor is one of the 3 still remaining gates of the old citywalls of Munich. (the others are Karlstor and Isartor ).
It was built in 1318 by emperor Ludwig der Bayer ( he is buried in a special tomb inside Fraunkirche !)
The gate looked a bit different in the medieval times, with one more tower and a gate divided into 3 much smaller doors than the big arch that you see today.

Sigi Sommer was a well known journalist and he had a regular article called "der Spaziergänger" ( the walker ) in one of the main newspapers in Bavaria .
He wrote about smaller events of everyday life and when he died some years ago, he got this nice monument in Rosenstrasse (between Marienplatz and Sendlingerstrasse) and that way you may still see him walking through his hometown Munich

In Löwengrube ( Lion's pit ) are the headquaters of the Munich police. The name came by the 2 lions sitting above the entrance, and maybe also by the purpose of the building.
Löwengrube is in one of the sidestreets of Neuhauserstrasse.
One of the best Bavarian TV-series is also called "Die Löwengrube" telling the story of a policeman and his family in Munich between 1930 and 1955, including ups and downs of the Nazis and WW II and showed great exemples of people who could survive it all easily...

Off The Beaten Path: Dreifaltigkeitskirche by C.D.Asam

Tip Rating: |

The Dreifaltigkeitskirche / Holy Trinity church is just a very small church but really decorated in a very special way. In times of war a young lady made a vow to build this church in Pacellistrasse 12, just a few meters from the luxury hotel Bayerischer hof ( and on my hoteltip about it, you may see this small church from outside !)
C.D.Asam made the paintings and stucco-works inside the church, that you may enter freely during the day, but you have to stay in the back behind a fence, where I took this picture !

Some of you might remember the lousy toiletts on the Hauptbahnhof in Munich, close to the S-bahn ...
Recently it became a Mc Clean and everything looks clean now like in a hospital...
...and prices went up a lot, too :
WC for 1,10 Euros Pissoir 0,60 Euros Shower 7,00 Euros Open daily from 06.00a.m. till midnight
a lot of money, but how many toilets do you know, that have their own web-page ??
When you get out of the train in Hauptbahnhof, take the exit for S1-S8, there is a small elevator down and directely at the end of this elevator is the place to go to the John !
