  • Schloss Nymphenburg is one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe and it was built around an italian Villa, that was bought by Kurfürstin Henriette Adelaide in 1663.
Various buildings were added step by step by different architects and today you get the feeling it was all built at the same time.
Schloss Nymphenburg is in the north-west on Munich and surrounded by a large park that includes some more places of interest :
Amalienburg - a small hunting lodge with a great Rokkoko-interior by Francois Cuvilliés
Magdaleneklause - a small building to pray and medidate
    Badenburg
    Pagodenburg

  • It was on june 13th , 1763 that father Leopold Mozart came to Nymphenburg palace, accompanied by his son Wolfgang Amadeus, who was just 7 years old at that time and already well known for playing the piano...
And of course Mozart had to play the piano in "Steinerner Saal", where lots of people could attend the performance of his music.

The diary of mother Mozart still exists and she listed there all the various palaces of Nymphenburg :
Amalienburg with the kitchen and bedrooms,
Badenburg with a big hall of mirrors
    Bagotenburg the smallest of them
    Eremitage - (obviously Magdalenenklause)
b.t.w. Nymphenburg is spelled differently in that diary :
    "Ninfenburg"

  • Blutenburg is a small castle in the west of Munich ,and it looks almost a bit like a russian monastery with a huge wall and towers around it and a system of canals and moats around it.
Blutenburg is in a distance of about 4km from Nymphenburg and dates back to the 14th century.
Blutenburg means "bloody castle" or rather "bleeding castle" and is used as a library today and as a recreation-area with great parks.

You may see the castle of Blutenburg on my link to www.multimap.com
It is the chuch shown in the lower part of the map, below Verdistrasse

The link below - unfortunately in German only - has plenty of interesting details about
Agnes Bernauer, Lola Montez etc. in Blutenburg !

Things To Do: the ceiling of the "Steinener Saal"
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schloßpark Nymphenburg - the ceiling of the entrance-hall
  • the ceiling of the entrance-hall

  • All of the walls of the big entrance-hall of the palace Nymphenburg have ornate decorations and also the ceiling has a great painting, showing the heaven of gods with the godess Flora in the centre and a lot of nymphs around her.
This painting was made by Johann Baptist Zimmermann in the age of 76 years.
He is also well known for the famous paintings in the church of Wies.
Wies-kirche is a MUST, when you travel though southern Bavaria !

Normally the light will be great to take photos inside the big hall during the day, as the big windows let a lot of light inside.
This picture was taken around 06.00 p.m. in summer 2004 without flash and without tripod.
Make sure you have an extreme wide-angle-lens to get all of the painting on one picture !

  • This is the view you will have from the palace Nymphenburg towards the front-park.
Click on my picture and you will see on the left the Olympic tower and the church on the right at about the place, where you get out of the tram, when arriving by public transportations.
You will also see the big artificial lakes, that you see on most postcards of the palace and where the swans are waiting to be fed by the tourists.

The park in the front will look best in the morning with the sun shining directely on it, and also the golden lanterns will look best then !

  • The park behind the palace of Nymphenburg is a lot bigger than the one in front and the terrace of the castle is a great place for a first view of it !
You will need almost a whole day in order to explore everything in Nymphenburg !!

Amalienburg - it was built by emperor Karl VII. for his wife Amalie - and is considdered the most beautiful Rokkoko-castle in the world !

Badenburg - was built in 1721 and was the first swimming-hall in Europe (past the old Romans)

    The Botanical Garden
    Monopteros
    Pagodenburg
    Palm-garden
    Waldkautz
    cascades and different lakes
The Marstall-museum with the royal carriages

This picture was taken in the late afternoon, when the sun came out for a few minutes and the golden chandeliers look a lot better than in overcast wheather.

Things To Do: the side-wings of the castle
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you click on my picture you may see the building on the left, that has the great chapel of the palace inside, without looking like a church from outside.
So be careful, not to pass by it ! - it is open all day and may be seen without a seperate ticket - have a look for my photos of its interior under "local customs-tips"
You should also take a closer look at the many big golden lanterns, all of them beautifully restored and looking best and almost a bit unreal in bright sunshine.
Originally they were lighted by candles.

  • Next to the palace in the centre of Nymphenburg you may see the side-wings with Hubertussaal and Orangeriesaal that are used today for exhibitions and they may be also rented for special occasions and private festivities. - just check the link below !
Exhibitions there will have completely different opening-hours.
The best part of that building was the cafe, BUT even that was closed already at 06.00 p.m., when I had finished my visit in Nymphenburg.
It is certainly the best to get to Nymphenburg palace & park already in the morning in order to be able to see & enjoy everything !!

  • The big hall in the centre of the palace Nymphenburg is the absolute highlight of the palace, and I may imagine that you could have a look inside even when the palace is closed already.
You simply walk up any of the 2 big stairs on both sides of the palace and look inside the big windows.

You may enter the church and it is really lovely inside ! - see my picture under "off the beaten path"
On the right of my picture you may also see the great medieval entrance-gate of the castle !
In the innercourt of Blutenburg you will also have a big "International Youth -library" and a nice garden-restaurant !

Obviously - perfect page with wonderful pics and interesting tips. Incredible, but we could almost meet in Nymphenburg in 2004 because I was there on August, 23 (your last visit - in September)! I wish Moscow have separate destinations for its estates...

Have to go inside next time! I was always somehow pulled to the cafe in the parc to sit and relax... Christian.

This is certainly a place I would like to see next time I visit Munich. I wonder about that gallery of beauties. Seems a bit odd of a collection to have! Anyways, great pictures and great tips!! Thanks Michael!
