Mdina once used to be the ancient capital of Malta and nowadays it is the old part of Rabat. Mdina is still surrounded by the old fortification-walls and a wide moat at one side and the steep cliffs at the other side.
Mdina was built on a small hill in the centre of the island with an excellent view of all of the island, so enemies approaching could be seen already a long time before they could reach Mdina.
