The parliament of Hungary is situated directely on the Danube and from the chain-bridge it takes about 15 minutes to walk there. It was heavily snowing, when I got there in the evening around 09.00p.m., but I think it was worth to see it also from behind. Until 1847 the parliament had been in Bratislava and was transfered to Budapest afterwards. The first years the parliament used to be in the "Vigadó / Redoute" and in 1866 they started to build the giant parliament with a dome, 96 meters high and with 10 innercourts. The parliament may be vsited, except when the government has to "work" Every hour on the hour you may enter: Mo-Fr. 08.00a.m. - 06.00p.m. Sat. 08.00a.m. - 04.00p.m. Sunday: 08.00a.m. - 02.00p.m. Guided tours in german : Mo-Sat always at 11.00a.m. + 03.00p.m.

Gerbeaud confectionary & restaurant is not only a great place to have coffee and a cake, but also a place of history, taking you back to the high times of the Austrian-Hungarian empire, when in 1858 Henrik Kugler built his 1st Kaffeehaus in the traditional Viennese style, that you actually will hardly find at all in Vienna any more today. Emil Gerbeaud was the next owner of the cafe and he soon became famous for his cafe. In summer you may sit outside and watch the people passing by, in winter you may enjoy the great atmosphere inside with lovely ornate stuccoworks, golden ornaments and chandeliers and an incredible choice of cakes !!

The Chain-bridge / Lánchíd was built in 1849 by Adam Clark and it was the 1st bridge combining the towns Buda with the royal castle and Pest, beeing the centre of politics and administration. It makes sense to WALK over the bridge, and especially at night it looks great with the 2 giant lions at each side and all of the bridge beautifully lighted. When big trucks go accross the bridge, you may feel the trembling of the construction

St.Stephen Basilika / Szent István bazilika dates back to the year 1867 and was consecrated to holy Stephen, the 1st christian hungarian king. The right hand of St.Stephen is kept as a reliquie and shown in a procession each year on August 20th. In 1990 the basilica got a new bell as a present by the bavarian town Passau in order to commemorate the days in 1989, when thousands of refugees from the former DDR were allowed by the hungarian governement to leave Hungary legally - it was the beginning of the "Velvet revolution" and fall of the Iron Curtain.

St.Stephen Basilika / Szent István bazilika looks really great from inside and you may enter it freely and without restrictions during the day ! At first you will pass by a counter that might give you the feeling, you have to pay an entrance-fee for the church, BUT in fact the 200 hufl you have to pay there get you inside the small treasury of the basilika, showing mainly a replica of the famous Crown of St.Stephen and a few golden monstrances. The church itself is free of charge !
There are some more pics of the Basilica in my travelogues - and a lot of great pictures on my link below !

The castle in Buda / Várpalota may be seen from most places along the Danube, like here not far from "Vigadó / Redoute" and "The little Princess".
The castle dates back to the 13th century but almost nothing is left from that time. Today you may visit the History museum of Budapest, the national gallery and the national library in the castle. You might need more than a day to explore the castle with all the museums and places of interest.

The Fisher Bastion / Halászbástya is one of the most famous sights of Budapest and you might have the feeling it dates back a few hundred years, BUT in fact it is just 100 years old now, having been finished in 1905 at a place, where formerly the fishmarket was held. Part of the ensemble are the statue of Holy Istvan and the Mathias-church. I was in Fisher Bastion at 08.00p.m., unfortunately the church was locked, but on the other hand everything was well lighted, and almost NO tourists around...

The Opera / Magyar Állami Operaház reminds me a lot of the Opera in Vienna and it was also built at almost the same time, in 1884. The architect was Miklós Ybl and at the main entrance you may see a sculpture of Franz Liszt and Ferenc Erkel. Inside you will see a perfect entrance-hall with an excellent mosaik and a great ornate ceiling. In the audience you will see a dome with frescos by Károly Lotz

Liberty bridge / Szabadság híd dates back to 1896 and was at first called Franz Joseph-bridge ( after the austrian emperor). It is the 2nd oldest bridge in Budapest and crosses the Danube between Gellert spa and the Markethall. It is an interesting iron-construction with nice ornaments and all of the construction is trembling under your feet, while big trucks go across the bridge.

The big Markethall / Központi Vásárcsarnok is an interesting construction next to the Liberty bridge, dating back to the year 1897. The whole iron-hall is 150 meters long and today the biggest of the covered markets in Budapest. It looks nice from outside and inside it is worth to go, in case that you are searching for flowers, fresh vegetables or fruits and cheap but good foodstands and restaurants - see my restaurant tips !
