Gerbeaud House: Gerbeaud / Gerbeaud cukraszda

  • Gerbeaud / Gerbeaud cukraszda
  • by globetrott

  • Restaurant Name: Gerbeaud House

Gerbeaud / Gerbeaud cukraszda is a traditional Kaffeehaus dating back to the year 1858 and it kept almost the same interior of that time:
Great chandeliers, mirrors with golden frames, ornate stocco-works at the ceiling,Thonet-chairs and marble-tables - just in the style of the traditional "Wiener Kaffeehaus" of the 19th century .
Unfortunately you may still see such places ONLY outside of Vienna nowadays ( i.e. in Czechia and Hungary)

Favorite Dish: Gerbeaud / Gerbeaud cukraszda serves great coffee and has a really big choice of homemade cakes.
In the same building, but with a seperate entrance they also have a restaurant open until late at night.
The Kaffeehaus Gerbeaud cukraszda is open daily 09.00a.m.-09.00p.m.
I had been there in 1987 and again in 2005.
Today the restaurant and Kaffeehaus Gerbeaud is again owned by an Austrian company.

Astoria Cafe: A cafe with a great interior
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Astoria Cafe

Astoria Cafe is a great place to have coffee in a great interior, dating back to the times of the Austria-Hungarian Empire, when all cafes in Budapest and other big cities tried to copy the Austrian Kaffeehaus.

Favorite Dish: Astoria Cafe is not a cheap place, it is in the very centre of Pest, just a few hundred meters from the Elisabethbridge.
Coffee and cakes - my favorite was "Dobós cake" , a sponge cake with plenty of thin layers of hazelnut-cream and a top of caramel.

New York Cafe House(under reconstruction): a special place with beautiful interior

  • New York Cafe in Budapest
  • by globetrott

  • Restaurant Name: New York Cafe House(under reconstruction)

Cafe New York / New York Kávéház will certainly be the most beautiful of all the cafes in the style of "Wiener Kaffeehaus" :
The big palais was first build by an insurance company with the name "New York" and got an Art Nouveau-Cafe with small boxes and galleries like in a theatre, an ornate golden decoration, marble, chandeliers, precious paintings...

Favorite Dish: The whole building was sold in 1999 and is reconstructed as a hotel today - its name will be " Boscolo Hotel " and the cafe will be a part of it !

Click on my link below and read more about it on their webpage !

  • Restaurant Name: Confectionary Hauer

Conditorei Hauer / Cukrászda Hauer is a traditional Confectionary dating back to the year 1890. Rezsö Hauer became famous with his cafe in 1896 and after beeing closed for several years it was restored and re-opened in the year 2002.
The cafe is on the busy street between Keleti pu and the Elisabethbridge .

Favorite Dish: This cafe is still quite cheap and still a place with a great interior, where a lot of local people go.
"Esterhazy-cake" is another one of my favorite cakes with a white sugar-glacing & chocolate pattern on top.

On my link below, you may see a few more pics about this great place !!

  • Restaurant Name: Muvesz Kavehaz - Artist Coffee House

Muvesz Kavehaz is a lovely oldfashioned cafe with a great interior and excellent cakes and coffee, and while walking through Budapest I had a short break there to warm up and enjoy the special atmosphere with lovely wallpapers, chandeliers, small marble-tables and mostly just local people.
This cafe is just a few steps from the Opera, BUT still not yet overrun by tourists !

Favorite Dish: They have a big choice of excellent cakes and the best is, you may see them in the vitrine and point at them, instead of ordering from a menu.
Coffe is strong and great, too !
I may highly recommend this place for the special atmosphere and the excellent cakes !!

  • Alcatraz - a funny restaurant
  • by globetrott

  • Restaurant Name: Alcatraz cafe - restaurant

Alcatraz is a nice restaurant and music-pub, close to the hostel Marco Polo.
On a regular basis there is live music - take a look at the link below.
It was mainly the funny entrance and the fancy decorations that attracted my attention - click on my picture and enjoy !
Prices are slightly above average, but still quite cheap for tourists.

    The restaurant is open :
    Monday-Wednesday 04.oo p.m.-02.oo a.m.
    Thusday - Saturday 04.00 p.m.-04.00 a.m.
    Closed every sunday !
the kitchen closes at 1:00 a.m.

Favorite Dish: I had a great Salmon steak and payed 2600 huft ( = 11€uros) , I think that is certainly a lot of money for the local people and hungarian prices look at the first view always quite high, but when you considder that 1 Euro is 245 huft, it is finally cheaper than any western country in Europe !

On the link below, you may also take a look at their menu and prices.

  • Restaurant Name: Various restaurants in the Markethall

The big Markethall / Központi Vásárcsarnok close to Liberty bridge is a really great place for a cheap meal.
You simply have to take the escalator or stairs to the 1st floor (USA:2nd floor) and there you will find a cheap self-service-restaurant in the centre of the hall and on both sides of the hall there is one food-stand after the other, prices are really cheap here and you may see what you get and point at the food.

Favorite Dish: Try the sausages, it need not be Salami, there are a lot more hungarian specialities.
