Gerbeaud House: Gerbeaud / Gerbeaud cukraszda

Restaurant Name: Gerbeaud House
Gerbeaud / Gerbeaud cukraszda is a traditional Kaffeehaus dating back to the year 1858 and it kept almost the same interior of that time: Great chandeliers, mirrors with golden frames, ornate stocco-works at the ceiling,Thonet-chairs and marble-tables - just in the style of the traditional "Wiener Kaffeehaus" of the 19th century . Unfortunately you may still see such places ONLY outside of Vienna nowadays ( i.e. in Czechia and Hungary)
Favorite Dish: Gerbeaud / Gerbeaud cukraszda serves great coffee and has a really big choice of homemade cakes. In the same building, but with a seperate entrance they also have a restaurant open until late at night. The Kaffeehaus Gerbeaud cukraszda is open daily 09.00a.m.-09.00p.m. I had been there in 1987 and again in 2005. Today the restaurant and Kaffeehaus Gerbeaud is again owned by an Austrian company.

Restaurant Name: New York Cafe House(under reconstruction)
Cafe New York / New York Kávéház will certainly be the most beautiful of all the cafes in the style of "Wiener Kaffeehaus" : The big palais was first build by an insurance company with the name "New York" and got an Art Nouveau-Cafe with small boxes and galleries like in a theatre, an ornate golden decoration, marble, chandeliers, precious paintings...
Favorite Dish: The whole building was sold in 1999 and is reconstructed as a hotel today - its name will be " Boscolo Hotel " and the cafe will be a part of it !

Restaurant Name: Muvesz Kavehaz - Artist Coffee House
Muvesz Kavehaz is a lovely oldfashioned cafe with a great interior and excellent cakes and coffee, and while walking through Budapest I had a short break there to warm up and enjoy the special atmosphere with lovely wallpapers, chandeliers, small marble-tables and mostly just local people. This cafe is just a few steps from the Opera, BUT still not yet overrun by tourists !
Favorite Dish: They have a big choice of excellent cakes and the best is, you may see them in the vitrine and point at them, instead of ordering from a menu. Coffe is strong and great, too ! I may highly recommend this place for the special atmosphere and the excellent cakes !!

Restaurant Name: Various restaurants in the Markethall
The big Markethall / Központi Vásárcsarnok close to Liberty bridge is a really great place for a cheap meal. You simply have to take the escalator or stairs to the 1st floor (USA:2nd floor) and there you will find a cheap self-service-restaurant in the centre of the hall and on both sides of the hall there is one food-stand after the other, prices are really cheap here and you may see what you get and point at the food.
Favorite Dish: Try the sausages, it need not be Salami, there are a lot more hungarian specialities.
