Zelena Hora is one of the most famous examples of the so-called "Baroque Gothic"-style. A formerly Gothic church was rebuilt and re-decorated in baroque style. The whole of the church follows certain rules and symbolisms : most of the rooms and ornaments have 5 edges, only the outside wall of the cemetery has 10 edges. The church was consecrated to the National saint of the Czech Republic :
Jan Nepomucky / Johann Nepomuk
He was thrown into the Moldau-river from Charle's bridge in Prague in may 16th, 1393. The legends says, that he was not willing to tell the king Wenzel IV any secrets, his wife told him during the confession.

Znojmo / Znaim is a small town of 39.ooo inhabitants and mainly famous for its wine and for its pickeled cucumbers ( the famous Znaimer Gurkerl ) Znaim is just about 35km south-west from Brno / Brünn. On my picture you see the theatre of Znojmo. There is also a great town-square and the lovely tower of the townhall, lots of great buildings and the castle.
1-2 hours should be enough to explore the city, especially when you are lucky to catch the small sight-seeing-train getting you to all places of interest.

One of my grandmothers came from Milicov - close to Jihlava / Iglau. For that reason I came there already once in communiste times, about 1978 in order to search for relatives. We stayed in a hotel in Jihlava and I was really impressed by the great town-square of the 1st city I could explore in Tschechoslovakia.
When I returned in summer 2004 I have to admit, it was nice, especially the old tower of the wall, but on the total - and after having seen so many much more beautiful towns in Czechia - I was a bit disappointed... Jihlava / Iglau is 80 km west of Brno / Brünn - and you may easily get there on the highway to Prague

Valtice castle is about 30 km south of Brno / Brünn. The castle still needs a lot of restorations inside, but it has already a nice hotel in the left wing of the castle : Hotel Hubertus
and inside the castle you may taste the local wines in a big wine-cellar or take a guided tour ( BUT photography is forbidden inside the castle !) A visit to Valtice castle may easily be combined with Lednice-castle, situated in a distance of just about 7 km.

Lednice / with the old german name Eisgrub is a really great and beautiful castle, where you may even take photographs inside the castle against a small fee ! You may only take a GUIDED tour through the castle and there are 2 different tours - each of them is about 1 hour That way you might need almost the whole afternoon for the castle and the big park around it.
Lednice is about 75 km north of Vienna and about 50 km south of Brno / Brünn .

Lysice is in a distance of about 25 km north of Brno / Brünn, and it is one of the best castles I have seen in Bohemia, and hard to find in any guidebook...
Lysice castle once belonged to Erwin Dubsky, an early globetrotter of the 19th century and a big part of the furniture and decorations in the castle still remind of his time as an admiral and world-traveller. My favorite was the japanese saloon !
The library of Marie von Ebner Eschenbach is certainly one of the highlights of the tour though the castle. Ebner-Eschenbach was born as countess Maria Dubska, niece of Edwin Dubsky .
Photography is allowed INside the castle, against a small extra-fee You will find plenty of infos and pics on my Lysice-page ! Just click on the link below !

Mikulov / Nikolsburg is one of the places, where you may cross the border to Austria, when driving to Vienna.
There is a great castle (seen on my picture ), a big thomb that looks rather like a church, a lovely house with graffitis and a jewish cemetery and a lot of baroque buildings. In Mikulov you may see the most important things, including the castle-garden within about 1-2 hours oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo You may click here in order to find Mikulov on a map by www.multimap.com ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Trebic is just about 40 km west of Brno / Brünn and you will pass by it on your way to Prague. Watch out for the great cathedral and the old monastery around it - on my pic you see one of the entrance-gates to the monastery ! When you go from Brno to Trebic, it might be the best to take the highway first and leave it in Velke Mezirici and follow the road Nr.360
