Things To Do: Hluboka castle

Hluboka castle was built already in the the 13th century. Later-on it was rebuilt several times and finally bought in 1661 by Jan Adolf I. von Schwarzenberg ( 1615-1685 ).
The Schwarzenberg family had German and Dutch origin - this might be one of the reasons, why you see so plenty of great Dutch paintings and tapisseries inside the castle.

Things To Do: rebuilt in Tudor-style in the 19th century

Jan Adolf II. von Schwarzenberg ( 1779-1888) and his wife Eleonora ( von Liechtenstein ) was a great politician and used to travel often to England and finally decided to rebuild their castle in Tudor-style, similar to Windsor castle.
And also the park around the castle reminds a lot of the famous english parks : In 1851 more than 11000 trees were planted, and plenty of them are still to be seen in the park around the castle, beeing almost as high as the castle today.

Things To Do: A very special door-handle opens the castle

Make sure you will not oversee this great work of art, when you enter the castle : These door-handles on bothe sides are made in the shape of a turque, beeing attacked by a raven.
This scene is also part of the emblem of the Schwarzenberg-family, and you may see it at several fountains, sculptures and other artifacts.

Things To Do: the gigantic entrance of Hluboka castle

|
|
Have a look for the gigantic entrance door, beeing more than 6 meters high. Also the door-handle and the door-knob / knocker are totally oversized.
As the re-construction-works at the entrance will go on in summer 2003, you might easily oversee that door, hidden behind obstacles.

Things To Do: the 1st court of the castle

In the first court you will be able to buy the tickets for each of the various tours through the castle. Every tour is explained in English and German, and also the cashier speaks good English and German. There is also a well sorted book- and souvenir-shop, and the restrooms.
Opposite of the ticket-office the tour to the castle-kitchen will start at certain times of the day.
You will realize, that the court is rather light, although it is rather small and has high walls. I am sure it is mainly an effect of the white stones of the castle-walls.

Things To Do: take one of the many tours through the castle

There are several tours of about 45 minutes each :
1) the livingrooms of Eleonora von Schwarzenberg 2) the armoury chamber 3)the old castle kitchen
Tours will mostly be held in Czech only, but I was lucky to be there , when a bustour from Germany had a tour in German. You may go on these tours ONLY with a guide, and at the ticket-office you will get the infos about the next tours.

Backwards in the 2nd court the tour will start at the entrance hall .
Have a look for the great wooden staircase with excellent woodcarvings and decorations!
The corridors of the different floors have arcades and balconies into the hall and a lot of light falls through the huge window on top.

Things To Do: the library

There are about 12000 books in several languages in the library, an astronomical and a geographical globe.
The wooden ceiling of the library was first built into a Bavarian castle of the Schwarzenberg-family and later transferred to Hluboka.

Things To Do: the round rooms in the towers
|
Tip Rating: |

My favorite rooms were the small round rooms inside the 4 huge towers of the castle.
This is a reading-room and on top of the mantlepiece you may see a wonderful frame around a mirror made by a masterpiece of woodcarvings.
And the walls are decorated with china from Asia and the Netherlands.
