Czech Republic is one of the very few countries still producing Absinth.
You may buy it in most of the souvenir-shops, for a price that is much cheaper than ordering it in your country over the internet.
The first stadium is like normal drinking...
the second stadium is like seeing cruel things...
but if you don't give up, you will see things you want to see - great, unusual things !

The Czech Language is very complicated and hard to learn. After several weeks you might understand a few words maybe, when you see them again and again, like otevreno (open)...
Plenty of people will understand Russian as well, but mostly it reminds them of hard times of Communisme...
Many will understand English or German, especially when they work in tourist industry.
Most restaurants will have English or German menues !
My pic is an old sign at the trainstation, where inscriptions in Czech,Russian and German made sense.
Normally even in many museums, everything is written in Czech ONLY - but papers with translations into various languages will be offered to tourists.

Sights: John Lennon and the Communists

Close to the Charlesbridge on the Kampa peninsula there is a wall of the Maltese embassy that shows plenty of graffities, including the most famous one :
John Lennon
It had to be repainted quite often in Communiste times, ( and therefore it looks a bit different on many pics ) as it was regularily removed by the police, as there was a " bad capitalist message" as well :
...You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one...
Today it is really hard to be found between so many other graffities with less peaceful messages...

Wentzel Square is much more than a nice boulevard to take a walk.
For the people in Prague and the whole of Czechia it is also a place, where they gather in order to protest.
Jan Palach, a young student burnt himself there in 1969 in order to protest against the end of the " Prague Spring Revolution "
Russian tanks occupied the square in 1968 and made an end to a smooth revolution " a la Prague " , that had given a bit of freedom of speach and arts to the people.

When crossing the Charles Bridge you may see , that almost everyone of the local people will touch a certain spot of the statue of Holy Jan Nepomuk, who was killed by the king by throwing him into the Moldau / Vltava from the bridge in 1393.
Touching the statue will bring good luck...

Local Customs: Have 5 Kronen at hand, when powdering your nose
|
Tip Rating: |

|
|
|
|
Public toilets are never for free in Prague. The ordinary fee is aroud 5 Kronen, at a very few places, like close to Charles Bridge it might be 10 Kronen. This is almost NO money (ca.0,15 $) for a tourist...
...and still it is a lot of money for the lady in charge to collect the money.
Plenty of toilets are found all over the city, simply follow the many signs.

Local Customs: Old street-names written in 2 languages

At some places, mainly around the castle of Prague, the old street-signs of the Austrian empire have survived.
"Fünfkirchengasse" means "street with the 5 churches", and even if I have not seen 5 churches there any more, at least the sign - not far from Waldenstein castle - has survived 2 Worldwars and some years of communisme.

Local Customs: strange ways to ride a horse ???

What a strange way to ride a horse !!
I saw this great sculpture in LUCERNA - shopping-centre, and finally found out a bit about it, when I asked a question in the VT-forum. Thanks a lot Carole (unravelau) for finding the info for me ! This nice sculpture was made by David Cerny in 1999 for the big hall inside the Post Office of Prague, but somewhow it was not accepted by the bosses there.
Still it is great to see, even the horse somehow seems to enjoy it.
That shopping-centre is in a sidestreet of Wentzel Square and Vodizkova !

drkraus Mon Jul 28, 2008 04:28 UTC I ate at Pivnice u Glaubicu on June 30th 2008. The waitress gave us a hand added bill on a napkin, that overcharged us, and refused to correct it. | coccinella169 Mon May 26, 2008 20:20 UTC Freue mich schon auf meinen nächsten Prag Besuch im Juni. Und das Strahov Foto sieht ja wirklich "himmlisch" aus :)! | unafarfalla Sat May 24, 2008 12:52 UTC It is absolutely not true that the Czechs don't give tips, where did you get it? Why are you giving such misleading information? Czechs simply leave how much they want. | betako3 Wed Jan 23, 2008 20:13 UTC I liked that tip about John Lennon graffiti:) I'm going to Prague in a few days and will definitely check out a few of your tips :) |
