U Bakalare - a restaurant in Prague
This great self service restaurant is about 500 meters from the famous "Powder Tower"
The staff speaks fluently German and also some English.
It might be some sort of a cafeteria for the nearby university, but many tourists go there as well. You may see what you get in a vitrine and there is also a small menu in English and german.
Favorite Dish: I was there to have a late breakfast with cake and espresso and once for lunch with roasted pork and beer.
For roasted pork with Sauerkraut and dumplings + 0,5 l beer I payed about 100 Kronen
Comparison: least expensive
Directions: The self-service restaurant "U Bakalare" is about 500 meters from the Powder Tower, when you walk to the centre of Prague !

Ceska Kuchyne - in the centre of Prague
This is a really cheap self-service restaurant in the centre of Prague, close to "Karlova" in the street "Husova"
THIS is a place, where local people go, and the food is really great !!
English and german menus are printed in the windows, BUT inside, everything is written in Czech ONLY .
BUT many of the servants speak very good german ( maybe also english ??) -
Favorite Dish: I had a Bortsch-soup ( in a very big bowl, that might be enough for a small hunger ) 16 Kr. (0,50 $)
1 roll and some sort of goulash with Sauerkraut and 4 dumplings ( they actually charge them by
slices !)
and 1 litre of Pilsner Urquell...
In total I payed the incredible amount of 105 Kronen ( ca. 3,3 $) and it tasted great and was too much for me with that great, thick Bortsch soup.
They also have vegetarian dishes and great fruit-dumplings for desert
Address: 110 00 Praha 1 - Havelska 23/501
Comparison: least expensive
Directions: In Havelska - a sidestreet of Karlova - and on your way from Wentzel-square to Charlesbridge

Fantovna Kavarna in Prag / Prague
This is one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau Cafes in Prague, but most people simply don't know, as it's main entrance was blocked away by the highway. It was built under a huge dome, beautifully decorated shortely before WW I.
When you click on my pic, you may see the tables and chairs set up around the balcony in the middle - from there you may watch the people using the subway-passage to the trains.
There will be more pics of that great trainstation in other chapters.
Favorite Dish: I had a double espresso and 2 Krapfen ( that is our german word, I am not sure about the english expression ) and payed 50 Kronen. (less than 2 $)
Simply check the small cake-buffet under the 2 big sculptures and point at your choice.
Directions: inside the train-station, same level as the trains, and next to track #1 ! Once that you are on track #1 walk along of it and try each possible exit there !

Hotel & Restaurant U Tri Pstrosu in Prague / Prag
This nice restaurant is on the right at the very end of Charles Bridge (Mala Strana-side)
Favorite Dish: They have a nice garden-restaurant and offer a great breakfast-buffet also for tourists, not living in their hotel.
I once had breakfast there for 300 Kronen (ca.10 $) - not really a cheap price for Prague, but a great choice and a very special location included !!
Comparison: more expensive than average
Directions: At the very end of Charles Bridge ( Mala Strana side)

Ozivle Drevo restaurant at Strahov monastery/Prag
This nice terrace-restaurant, close to the Strahov monastery, offers a great view over the city of Prague.
Favorite Dish: This is a great place for a small rest after having visited Strahov monastery with its famous library.
On my pic-combination you see 2 small pics of the monastery and the library .
More infos about the monastery are under "Must see activities"
Comparison: about average
Directions: 100 meters from the Strahov monastery

Beer cheese & Hermelin K Pivu
Pivnice U GlaubicuThis restaurant is built into the arcades of Malostranske Nam (close to St.Niklas-church)
On my pic you see the great arcades with about 40 seats outside and a lot more inside.
Favorite Dish: My favorite dishes in this restaurant were :
"Hermelin K Pivu" - camembert pickeled in oil and herbs - Tastes simply great !!!
"Pivni Syr" - Beer cheese, as you may see on the right. It is served with a tiny extra glass of beer and that beer should be poured over the cheese, onions, mustard, and then dip in the cheese..
I simply REFUSED to do this - and it tasted great anyway.
I payed 59 Kronen for each plate of cheese and 46 Kronen for 1 litre of Pilsner Urquell
makes a total of 164 Kronen ( ca. 5$) - a moderate price for us, but certainly too much for the average local population.
Directions: This restaurant is built into the arcades of Malostranske Nam (close to St.Niklas-church)

Ginger&Fred and La Perle de Prague
La Perle de Prague was built into the last 2 floors of the so-called "Ginger&Fred-building"
that you may see on my pic : It really looks like Ginger Rodgers and Fred Astair dancing.
Favorite Dish: Inside the restaurant, there is absolutely no music, so you may fully concentrate on your
lunch and dinner.
Next door, at the bar, you may dance.
opening times :
Tuesday till Saturday : 12.00 p.m.-02.00 p.m. monday 07.00 p.m.-10.30 p.m.
Tel. 2198 4160
Comparison: most expensive
