a wallachian roof - Roznov pod Radhostem

a wallachian roof

The typical roof of a Wallachian house

Wallachian houses mostly have a typical and very special kind of roof :
There is a seperate half-circle on each side of the saddle-roof and in many cases - especially when the farmers were rich and wealthy - these half-cercles had some decorations and inscriptions like on my picture.

This is the ornate inscription you may see on the store barn built by Jan Belicek in 1882.
Another good example of such a roof is the art-Nouveau-hotel Libusin & Mamenka in nearby Pustevny / Pustevne - see my 2nd hotel-tip !
Watch out for the many other tradtional houses of the region - most of them have that kind of roof !

meet a sheep for breakfast - Roznov pod Radhostem

meet a sheep for breakfast

Take a sheep out for lunch

Be careful, when sitting for breakfast or lunch in the small restaurant on top of the Wallachian village.
Sheep and goats are running free and might come and want to share your meal.
I have several such pics and will maybe put them in a travelogue, as it was really funny to see this sheep running in and out of the restaurant.
Do NOT expect that a sheep would run away, simply because you start to scream, it will stay and not care at all.
A rather safe place in the restaurant is inside, where the big oven is, because there is a door that you may close in case of another sheep-attack...

a grindstone - Roznov pod Radhostem

a grindstone

small machineries made in the old times

Look at this interesting example of a grindstone, obviously handmade by one of the farmers by use of simple things found in the woods.
Machineries like this one are mostly to be seen in the Walachian village, where the houses are a lot smaller and where you may see that these farmers lived a much harder life than the farmers down in the valleys.

the cemetery - Roznov pod Radhostem

the cemetery

a nice cemetery around the wooden church

Around the wooden church they had a wall, mainly in order to keep out the ducks, sheep and goats strolling freely through the village.
Inside the walls you may still find plenty of interesting graves, like the one on my picture, decorated in a simple but beautiful way by two wooden flowers as a decoration.
Have a look around, also these graves are samples of graves from all over Czechia and had been reconstructed here in the museum of wooden houses.
In the back of my picture you may see the wall, covered by a simple wooden roof.
Mainly by these small, special details, you get the feeling, you would walk through a real wooden village in the old times...

the old K&K Postamt / the austrian postoffice - Roznov pod Radhostem
the old K&K Postamt / the austrian postoffice

This sign dates back to the time, when Czechia was still a part of the Austrian empire and all signs had Czech and German inscriptions.
K&K ment "Kaiserlich und Königlich" - so it was the post-office of the emperor and the king.
You may walk inside the former postoffice and it is used as a souvenir-shop today, where you may buy postcards, booklets and are also able to post your postcards.
The interior of the old post-office looks nice as well, but the lady in there did not allow me to make a picture... :-(((

The post-office is close to the church in the small Wooden village

wooden constructions in the old times - Roznov pod Radhostem
wooden constructions in the old times

When walking through the 3 different museums in Roznov pod Radhostem / Rosenau am Radhost you will see how these wooden buildings were constructed , with a lot of moss between the big trunks of wood.
That way the cold winds stayed out of the house.
The building on my picture is the post-office and the house dates back to the year 1770.

the grocery in the museum - Roznov pod Radhostem

the grocery in the museum

the old grocery

The old grocery is worth seeing for various reasons, and it is great to see such a place again after all of the years with modern supermarkets only...
Click on my picture and you will see on the left a big glass with pickeled cucumbers that were sold one by one, and the old-fashioned scale, still totally working without batteries, computer-chips and software.
Unfortunately you may not really enter the grocery , but have to stay behind a fence and have a look through.
It certainly would have been nice to see such a place " working " the way it was in the old times...

the old merry-go-round in the museum - Roznov pod Radhostem

the old merry-go-round in the museum

the ancient merry-go-round

In the very back of the wooden village you will see this romantic merry-go-round and like in the old days you may take a seat and will need someone to take one of the big handles and make the whole construction turn around.
There is NO electric- or steam-engine, everything works only by muscular-power.
You may use it free of charge and it might be a really funny thing to remeber for children, as today they are mostly just used to a completely other kind of amusement...

a beehive in the wooden village - Roznov pod Radhostem

a beehive in the wooden village

another funny beehive

This is another funny beehive, and when you click on my picture and take a closer look, you will realize, the great humor of these faces.
Honey was a precious good in the old times and sugar was certainly really hard to get in smaller villages.
So the own production of honey was a good chance for farmers to have some extra income and of course honey was also used as a medicine in these days.
