The townhall / Rathaus of Rothenburg ob der Tauber consists of 2 different buildings : The white part, dating back to the Gothic, with the high tower, that offers a great panorama-view for sporty, slim or at least VT-addicted tourists ( read more about this under "Warnings") The other part of the townhall dates back to the Renaissance and when you intend to climb up the tower of the gothic part, you have to start at the middle-tower of the Renaissance townhall and walk through the roofs of it, before you will get to the panorama-platform. The tower is open daily 09.30a.m.-12.30noon and 01.00p.m.-05.00p.m. The entrance-fee is 1 Euro / o,50 Euros for children

Ratstrinkstube is the name of this lovely building on Marktplatz, dating back to the year 1446. In 1683 a special clock was added and each hour on the hour between 11.00a.m. and 03.00p.m. and at 09.00+10.00p.m. that clock shows a scence of the "Meistertrunk" The ledgend of "Meistertrunk" dates back to the year 1631, when the lord mayor of Rothenburg , Nusch, was able to drink a jug with 3 litres of wine in one draught. That way he saved the town of beeing burned down by the troops of the emperor.

Things To Do: Ploenlein - where most of the pics are taken

Ploenlein is a small square, where most of the tourists take photos, simply because this is the view you may find on almost every book and postcard about Rothenburg ob der Tauber. You may get to this place, when you walk down Untere Schmiedgasse from Marktplatz. After about 300 meters you arrive there and may see "Sieberturm" / the old tower on the left of my picture. From Plönlein another small street (Muehlackersteig) is going down to another old towngate (Kobolzeller Tor), on the right of my picture.

Things To Do: Walk the medieval town-walls
Tip Rating: |

This is what makes Rothenburg ob der Tauber so unique - it still has the old, medieval town-walls and you may even freely walk around the town that way - free of charge, at any time, day and night. Still today the centre of Rothenburg may be entered through one of the several gates only.. Today the main trafic stays outside, a great parking-system provides plenty of parkings outside the walls - just follow the signs...
In case that your hotel is inside the city-wall, you better check on their homepage for the perfect street to take in order to get there !

Directions: Between Klingtentor in the north and Spitalsbastei you may walk more than 1500 meters on top of the wall !

Things To Do: Marienapotheke at Marktplatz

Marienapotheke at Marktplatz is most probably the oldest pharmacy still operating in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Just have a closer look at their halftimbered house with a beautifully decorated bay-window, that rather would deserve to be called tower. And right underneath that small tower a sculpture of Holy Mary and her child. Next to the pharmacy you may see one of the most beautiful fountains of Rothenburg ! - see my next picture !

Things To Do: St.Georg on top of the lovely well on Marktplatz
Tip Rating: |

There is St.Georg on the very top of the column, standing in the centre of the fountain on Marktplatz, where in the medieval times all people living in the city of Rothenburg had to get all of the water they needed for cooking, washing and drinking. There are still 4 tubes spitting out the water, but today you may only watch some doves drinking there without caring a lot for the great decorations of this fountain.

Things To Do: St.Jakob - the main altar of 1466

The gothic altar of St. Jakob is one of the many artistical highlights of that church. It was made by Friedrich Herlin in 1466 and when you click on my picture, you may see plenty of fine details of the gothic woodcarvings. next to the main altar is another beautifully decorated side-altar, made of sculptured sandstone. It is a pity I could not get any closer with my camera, because of the alarm-system !

This small side-altar is called "Ludwig von Toulouse-Altar" and the sculpture in the centre was made by Tilman Riemenschneider, one of the most famous artists of his time. Ludwig von Toulouse (1274-1297) was a franciscan monk and archbishop, who died in the age of 23. Ludwig was cononized in 1317 and the paintings around the sculpture show various stations of his life. These paintings were made by Jakob Muellholzer.
Don not oversee that lovely side-alter !!

Things To Do: The Heiligblut-altar by Tilman Riemenschneider
Tip Rating: |

The Heiligblut-altar in the back of St. Jakob is another important highlight of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It may easily be overseen, as you have to step up a long stair to a back-part of the church, behind of the organ. There, in the so-called Heiligenblut-Kapelle / (chapel of the Holy Blood) you may see one of the most beautiful and most precious altars by Tilman Riemenschneider, made in the year 1500.

Rothenburg is my favorite German city!!! | imlikeabird Wed Sep 12, 2007 14:29 UTC Wow, this takes me back. My husband & I were in Germany last October. It was my 3rd trip & his 1st to Germany. He was working there & a one day trip to this little town was about all the sight-seeing he got to do. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. | MissyWQ Fri Apr 13, 2007 04:21 UTC Wow, after seeing your photos I realize I missed going inside the buildings and churches. | Kuznetsov_Sergey Wed Feb 28, 2007 16:29 UTC How could I skip this beautiful town passing it by? Now I know that this purl of Romantishe Strasse would be in my wish Bavarian list. But not this year: SV BSZS will be held in Braunshweig - too far. Thanks a lot Michael - great job as usual! |
