General Tips: OB der Tauber - what an expression ??

Favorite Thing: I very often wondered, where the name "OB der Tauber" comes from and I found out about it, when I had a look into the landscape around Rothenburg from the observation-tower of the townhall: When you click on my picture you will see that Rothenburg was built on a small hill, and in the valley the tiny river Tauber is flowing - you see a small part of the Tauber on my picture, and a winding path is leading up the hill to the city. So Rothenburg is OB(erhalb) der Tauber, (high above the river Tauber)
Fondest Memory: My fondest memory of Rothenburg ?? To be honest, it was quite an achievment for me to get out on the small platform, from where I took this picture and I was lucky to have some minutes there on my own. Finally when climbing down again I was successful as well without slipping down the dangerous steps. More details about the last steps to the observation-tower are under my "Warnings"

General Tips: Rothenburg - a tourist-trap of the lovely kind
|

Favorite Thing: On my picture you may see Weinhaus Nusch on the right and Sieber-Turm, the tower that almost every tourist takes a picture of from the other side, in combination with the famous view from Ploelein. In my opinion it certainly makes sense to walk through it and explore also the rest of the street towards Spitalbastei.
Fondest Memory: Take a walk through town and you will see so plenty of souvenir-shops... ...and of course a place like this is mostly tourist-orientated, but I think here it is made in a soft and nice way, you will not feel ripped off like in Disney-world Paris, where your bags will be searched for picknick, you might take with you instead of going to their restaurants...

Favorite Thing: Normally a shop, selling only Christmas-decorations all year long would have no chance at all in Europe, BUT in Rothenburg so plenty of tourists from Japan and USA are a guearantee for a good business.
Fondest Memory: So this is one of the lovely traps : Kaethe Wohlfahrts Christmas-shop and it is open all year and it has this wonderful oldtimer-car in front with plenty of parcels...

General Tips: The history of Rothenburg dates back to 970

Favorite Thing: The history of Rothenburg dates back to the year 970 when a noble man named Reiniger built a small castle high above the small river Tauber. In 1108 the last earl of Rothenburg died without children and all of his posessions were given as a donation to the monastery Comburg. In 1172 Rothenburg gets the rights of a town and the inner circle of the townwall was built. From that inner wall you may still see today : Weisser Turm, Markusturm and Roederbogen.

General Tips: Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a "Freie Reichsstadt"

Favorite Thing: In 1250 the city of Rothenburg starts to build the gothic townhall - (the part with the observation-tower and the white facade) In 1274 Rothenburg ob der Tauber becomes "freie Reichsstadt" - a status grating certain rights by the king. This is why the museum of the town is still called "Reichsstadtmuseum" In 1311 they start to build St.Jakob-church , that will not be finished untill 1485. In 1356 an earthquake destroyes a big part of Rothenburg
Fondest Memory: On my picture : The path on top of the medieval townwall and the parking on Schrannenplatz.

Favorite Thing: In 1544 St.Jakob is transfered into a protestant church. In 1618 Rothenburg has to pay an enormous amount of money for the 30-year-war and large parts of Rothenburg are destroyed by soldiers passing through In 1648 Rothenburg has to pay 50.000 Guilders for reparations at the end of the war - they do not have enough money and need a credit. In 1802 the city of Rothenburg looses its independance and becomes part of Bavaria. In 1881 the first performance of the traditional festivity "Der Meistertrunk"
Fondest Memory: Be careful with the pavement - at many places you will have cobbled stones, pretty to look at but a bit dangerous sometimes

General Tips: Rothenburg ob der Tauber in WW II

|
Favorite Thing: In march 31st, 1945 Rothenburg ob der Tauber gets partly destroyed by bombs of the allied troops, simply because a german General had choosen his head-quaters in Rothenburg . All of the buildings were restored again after the war, also with the financial help of people from all parts of the world. Today you may get the feeling to see houses of the medieval times, but in fact most of them had to be restored after WW II.
Fondest Memory: On my picture : a lovely halftimbered house in Klingengasse, on your way from St.Jakob to Klingen-Tor. When you click on my picture you see the Jakob-shell, the symbol for the Jakobus-path to Santiago de Compostela.

SONG Thu Nov 1, 2007 01:44 UTC I also made it to this point and saw the great view. Well worth the effort to reach this point. Rothenburg is my favorite German city!!! | imlikeabird Wed Sep 12, 2007 15:29 UTC Wow, this takes me back. My husband & I were in Germany last October. It was my 3rd trip & his 1st to Germany. He was working there & a one day trip to this little town was about all the sight-seeing he got to do. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. | MissyWQ Fri Apr 13, 2007 05:21 UTC Wow, after seeing your photos I realize I missed going inside the buildings and churches. | Kuznetsov_Sergey Wed Feb 28, 2007 16:29 UTC How could I skip this beautiful town passing it by? Now I know that this purl of Romantishe Strasse would be in my wish Bavarian list. But not this year: SV BSZS will be held in Braunshweig - too far. Thanks a lot Michael - great job as usual! |
