Schloss Eggenberg is without doubt the most beautiful palace in Graz. It dates back to the year 1623 and the architect had a certain concept for the construction : The 4 seasons of the year are symbolized by the 4 towers, 12 gates were built because of the 12 months of the year and all over the palace of Eggenberg you may count 365 windows.
The architect was Pietro de Pomis, a pupil of Palladio. The interior of the palace is really wonderful with precious stucco-works, frescos, paintings and chandeliers.
that will be held daily except mondays at

Dreifaltigkeitskirche dates back to the year 1696 and it was first built as a monastery-church. Dreifaltigkeitskirche shows a great baroque interior and you may take a look through an iron- fence in the back of the church during the day. This church is just a few steps from the Murinsel and also from Kriegsteig.
Address: A-8010 Graz - Sackstrasse
Directions: Dreifaltigkeitskirche is opposite of Kiegsteig and Schlossbergplatz. Tram #4 and #5 will take you there !
2 precious shrines inside the Dom
The most precious works of art inside the Dom are certainly the 2 shrines on both sides of the Altar :
Both of them belonged to Paola Gonzaga , and were transported first from her home in Mantua to a castle in Lienz, when she married Leonhard von Görz in 1477. The decorations are made by Andrea Mantagna by ivory and bones and show a poem by Petrarca ( I Trionfi ). The couple died without children and so these precious shrines were donated to the church, who used them for reliquies of christian martyrs.
Address: A-8010-Graz - Burggasse
Directions: When you are inside the cathedral of Graz ,you may see these shrines on both sides of the altar.
the dome of Katharinenkirche
The Mausoleum & Katharinenkirche are a must, when visiting Graz ! Both of them are next to the Dom and the Mausoleum dates back to the year 1614. Emperor Ferdinand gave the order to build the Mausoleum and the church next to it. It was built by the italian painter and architect Giovanni Pietro de Pomis. The oval dome above the krypta was the first of its kind outside of Italy.
The Mausoleum was finished by a young man from Graz, who became one of the most famous baroque architects in Austria :
Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (architect of Karlskirche etc. in Vienna)
Today the church and the Mausoleum are a museum !
daily 10.30a.m.-12.30a.m. + 01.30p.m.-04.00p.m.
There is just 1 ticket for both of them,
including the tower of the Mausoleum
(BUT the tower is IMHO not worth the effort !!)
Address: A-8010 Graz - Burggasse 2
Directions: The Mausoleum is next to the Dom and not far from Burg and Burggarten.
Der Dom - the cathedral of Graz
Der Dom, the cathedral of Graz looks rather like the church of a small village from outside, BUT it is really worth to go inside and you will be surprised by the many unique works of art there.
You may enter the Dom freely and withourt restrictions during the day, photography is no problem inside the cathedral !
Take your time to see all of the lovely details of the great baroque architecture. When you click on my last picture you may see a fresco showing holy Christopherus, who has the face of the emperor Friedrich III.
Address: A-8010-Graz - Burggasse 1
Directions: The Dom is opposite of the Burg (with the spiral staircase) and next to Burggarten and the Mausoleum.
a great Art Nouveau-facade in Sporgasse Nr.3
Sporgasse Nr.3 might be another highlight for all fans of great Jugendstil / Art-Nouveau-facades. Opposite of this building you will find 2 lovely garden-cafes facing this facade !
Sporgasse is a small street going up the hill from Rathausplatz - this house is on the left just a few steps from Rathausplatz - and as the street is rather narrow there, you may easily miss it...
A tip for photographers : when you come in the afternoon, you might have the sun shining directely on the golden ornaments !
Also at night this facade is really perfectely lighted !
Address: Graz - Sporgasse Nr.3
Directions: This Art Nouveau-facade is in Sporgasse Nr.3, the 3rd house on the right, when you walk uphill from Hauptplatz. You may take the trams #1,3,4,5,6,7 in order to get there & get out at Hauptplatz !
the great arcades of the court of the Landhaus
The Grazer Landhaus with these great arcades reminds me a lot of the great italian architecture of the Renaissance.
You may enter this innercourt during the day freely and without restrictions - no admission charge - maybe they close the gates at night - but during the day you may walk there freely !
Unfortunately all of stairs going to the top of the arcades will be locked - but I found a great place to take a pic of the whole innercourt, from the 4th floor of the " Landeszeughaus " !
Address: Graz - Herrengasse
Directions: These arcades are in the innercourt of Landhaus in Herrengasse - to get there take any of these trams : #1,3,4,5,6,7 !
Glockenspielplatz & the famous chimes of Graz
Glockenspielplatz is situated in the old centre of town, and since more than 100 years the top windows of that little tower will open three times the day and you may watch a dancing couple in traditional austrian costumes dancing to the music of the chimes... The rest of the day, the gates are closed like you may see it at my last 2 pics !
The chimes / Glockenspiel is one of the highlights in Graz and you may see busloads of people waiting there at certain times - so make sure, you get there some time before the "show" will start !
at 11.00 a.m. + 03.00 p.m. + 06.00 p.m.
each performance takes about 5 minutes !
BUT when you have seen the 1st minute, you have seen it all....
Address: Graz - Glockenspielplatz 1
Directions: You will get to Glockenspielplatz when walking one of the tiny streets opposite of Landeszeughaus and Landhaus. You will get then to the "Bermuda-triangle" with plenty of garden-restaurants and finally to Glockenspielplatz.
Luegghaus is the name of this beautiful building at Hauptplatz, at the corner to Sporgasse.
"Lueg ums Eck" is an ancient way to say in german :"look around the corner" and it is a good name for a building at such an important place. The best time to take photographs of the building is in the afternoon and even better at night, when the flood-light is shining on the facade and you will see all of the various decorations and stucco-works much better than during the day.
Address: Graz - Sporgasse & Hauptplatz
Directions: Luegghaus is at the right corner when you leave Hauptplatz and walk up Sporgasse. You may take various trams in order to get there : #1,3,4,5,6,7.
Landhaus -the seat of the local government
In Herrengasse,( the main shopping-street in Graz), you will see this building : the famous " Landhaus " It was built for the administration of the county Steiermark / Styria - and it was built in the special Renaissance-style that was already influenced a lot by the italian architecture.
The most beautiful part of Landhaus is not that great fassade, but the inner-court - look for the balconies - the entrance to the inner-court is just below the balcony.
You may enter the building and the court freely and without restrictions during the day.
Address: Graz - Herrengasse
Directions: The Landhaus is in Herrengasse - you may take the trams #1,3,4,5,6,7 in order to get there !
