  • The parish church of Melk is just a few steps from the town-square and still most people see it only from outside, when they take a look down from the terrace of the monastery. I think it is also worth to take a look inside for the lovely wood-carvings that you may see there at the pulpit, the altars and many decorations - just enlarge my photographs and enjoy these great works of art.
b.t.w. you will pass by the church, when walking to the train-station of Melk !

  • "Alter Brotladen" is the name of this lovely building in the centre of Melk. The name comes from the fact that 3 bakeries had once an outlet there, where they sold their bread. The building itself was once part of the medieval fortifications and includes various loopholes and is thatched by wooden tiles.
Today it marks the beginning of the upper street leading to Hotel Stern, but with cars you have to enter it from the other side !

  • Don't miss to take a walk at the market-square of Melk. It is a pedestrian-zone right underneath the monastery and has plenty of beautiful baroque buildings, cafes and the great fountain. Melk is well worth to stay there for a while and explore the life in a small town in Austria. The centre of Melk is mostly completely overseen by the masses of tourists that normally just visit the monastery and rush to the ships in order to cruise the Danube.

  • Landschaftsapotheke is quite a strange name and I could not find out, where it comes from. The building dates back to the 16th century and had been an inn before. What makes the building worth seeing are the wooden covers of the windows, that are beautifully painted. Landschaftsapotheke is on the main-street in the pedestrian zone of Melk.

  • Stift Goettweig is an interesting monastery at the end of Wachau, high above the Danube-valley you may see its giant buildings already from a big distance. This benedictinian monastery has a series of beautifully furnished rooms provided for noble travellers, kings and emperors. It was a time, when bishops had a certain profane power as well and it was their task to educate the population and to support economy and agriculture and quite often the emperor sent his officials for inspections.
The big staircase in the Kaiserhalle of Stift Goettweig is one of the most famous works of art made by the baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. You would rather expect such a hall in a king's palace instead of a monastery.
    --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
You may get to Stift Goettweig by bus from Krems
or drive there with your own car,
a big carpark is directely at the monastery !
I made a seperate page about it under the village of "MAUTERN"

  • Maria Taferl is a lovely pilgrim-church just a few km north-west of Melk and when you have your own car, you may combine a visit there easily with a visit to Melk. The basilica of maria Taferl is on a hill high above the Danube-valley and a steep road will take you there. Don't miss the ornate basilica and the terrace overlooking the Danube-valley.

  • Schallaburg is an old castle with a very interesting and quite unique architecture, because it is the only castle in Austria that has arcades made of terracotta. Schallaburg is in a distance of just 6 km from Melk, but you need your own car in order to get there. The local bus from Melk seems to run just a few times every day and is rather ment for local people than for the ordinary tourists. I will add the link to oebb anyway, maybe you are more lucky than I was, when searching for a bus there.
The castle is open mainly during the summer and has a shuttle-bus then from Melk.
the castle is open daily from end of April till end of October

  • Aggstein is the most famous castle-ruin in the Wachau-valley and it used to be a so called " Raubritterburg " - a castle of " robber-barons "
It was a great place to hide up in the mouintains, beeing safe there, when returning from their robberies. The castle was finally destroyed a long time ago, but just a few years ago a big part of the castle had been restored and serves now as a restaurant for large banquets and there is also a Wonderland for children in the vaults of the castle with small scenes of fairy-tales and the early history of Austria - see my pictures !
Something quite unique is the so-called "rosary" / Rosengarten - a sarcastic expression for the small rock outside of the castle, where prisoners were held (without the modern fence on my picture) and they could decide for themselves, if they would prefer to jump into death or rather starve there. (see my last picture)
For a visit in Aggstein you will need a car or take a walk of about 60 minutes at a steep path uphill.

  • The small palace of Artstetten - just about 15 km north-west of Melk used to be the palace of Franz Ferdinand, the successor to the throne of the austrian empire, who was killed in Sarajevo june 28th, 1914.
In the years 1892-1893 crown-prince Franz Ferdinand sailed around the world onboard of a ship of the austrian marine and you may still see plenty of his souvenirs in the museum of Artstetten palace. They also have a replica of the car, he was in , when he was killed. This car was reconstructed for a movie and is displayed now in the museum.
You may also see a small-scale-model of the austrian "K&K submarine type 5" that participated in WW I under a world-famous commander : Georg Ritter von Trapp (he was the father of the family, whose real life was transfered into the movie "Sound of Music".
Don't miss the lovely chapel - the entrance is outside of the museum and free of charge !

  • Schoenbuehl is a lovely palace just a few km downstream from Melk. There is that palace - privately owned and NOT open to the public, but at least you may walk along the right bank of the Danube a bit in order to take a picture of that lovely spot. In front of the palace there is a large rock in the middle of the river and in that area is only one-way-trafic for big ships.
Not far from that castle you may see a lovely monastery - the best view of it is from a cruiseship. This monastery may be visited upon appointment - use the telephone-number below ! Make a stop at the monastery, when passing by on the road of the right bank of the Danube, at least you may take a look inside the church through a fence.
