Oberndorf is the small village where the world-famous christmas-song "Silent Night , Holy Night" was performed for the 1st time in history. The original church does not exist anymore, it was damaged by high floods of the river Salzach and was replaced by a small chapel, that you may visit freely and without restrictions during the day. Opposite of that chapel you may see the town-museum that shows also lots of interesting facts and exhibits about the rafting on the river Salzach, that was a priviledge for the town of Oberndorf for several centuries : nobody else was allowed to take the precious salt down the river Salzach.
Across the river there is Lauffen, in Germany, a different village, although it looks like another part of Oberndorf |
