Wolfgangsee, seen from Schafberg

Wolfgangsee is one of the most famous places in Salzkammergut, not only because of the famous restaurant " Weisses Rössel ", but also because of the great landscape with the lovely lake surrounded by a lot of huge mountains.
When taking the train up to Schafberg - try to get a seat on the left of the train in order to have the best opportunities to take pics of the great landscape !!

Wolfgangsee

Take a boat ride - some of these boats are part of the ÖBB - the austrian train system - and will be included in Interrail- & Eurorail-tickets etc.

This ship is just going to land next to " Schafbergbahn " - an old steam-train, going up Schafberg to a hight of about 1900 meters.
On my link below you may check the timetable for the ships and for the steamtrain up to Schafberg !

Schafbergbahn in St.Wolfgang

This is the train, and you may see, how steep the rails are at some places.

Make up your mind, BEFORE you buy your train ticket !

There are combination-tickets available ONLY at the trainstation down in the village
including Breakfast or lodging in the hotel.

and in combination with the train-ticket you really save about 5-12 €uro per person

This is the panorama that you will see from the Hotel Schafberg:

Wolfgangsee
Hintersee

It is a pity that the 4 pics have different colors, but I am sure you may get an impression, what to expect on the top of Schafberg.

The last train was leaving in St.Wolfgang at 06.00 p.m. and after a ride of 40 minutes I had a stay there of 30 minutes, before the last train was going down again at 07.10 p.m.

Heaven's gate looking towards

Traunsee

Just about 200 meters below the top of Schafberg, you will see this " Heavens-door " - it is a very steep way down into the valley.
The small path is mostly secured by iron ropes fixed to the rocks like a hand-rail.
The lake in the background is Attersee.

Just be careful, as a sign shows that this way down is very dangerous for un-experienced climbers !!

The church of St. Wolfgang is built on a small terrace, overlooking the hotel Weisses R?ssl
You may see it from inside ONLY at certain times.
The church was built in 1477 and in 1676 the famous altar by Schwanthaler was added

inside of a small arcady .

Watch out for the many great fassades, mainly in the streets around the church, where the centre of town was built already in the year 976, when the monastery of Mondsee started to build the village.

Wolgangsee im Salzkammergut

Unfortunately lots of beaches are in private posession of hotels, but at some places you still may walk directely on the beach and enjoy the great view of the lake.

Be prepared to be in good company of busloads of people doing the same during the day, while in the evening, after 07.00 p.m. the village gets rather "empty" and much more romantic, when the daytour-buses have left.
