Getting TO/AROUND: Take tram Nr.1 or Nr.2 in order to go around the Ringstrasse and hop on and off as often as you want to.
Nr 1 is going in both directions around Ringstrasse from the Opera to Schwedenplatz and finally to Hundertasserhaus and the Prater (BUT unfortunately not to a place of the giant area of the Prater that is colse to the Giant-Ferris-Wheel/Riesenrad!!!).
You will pass by sights like the parliament ( on my picture), Opera, Hofburg & Heldenplatz, University, Rathaus, Volkspark Votivkirche, Boerse...

Tram Nr 2 is going now into both directions as well between Boerse - Votivkirche - Rathaus - Parliament - Heldenplatz - Opera - Scharzenbergplatz - Stadtpark...
It is certainly the best to have a dayticket, so you may as well go back a few stations.

In OLD brochures and guidebooks you will still find the info that #1 and #2 are going around all of the Ringstrasse, but that system was changed in spring 2009 !
There is a seperate tram for sightseeing now and it is NOT included in the ordinary daytickets, but 14 euros extra for the whole day !

Getting TO/AROUND: THIS is a funny way to explore Vienna !
All you have to do is
REGISTER with an Austrian Bancomat-card (ATM-card), registry is just 2 Euros.

    the 1st hour is free
    2 hours = 2 Euros
    3 hours is 4 Euros
    4 hours is 8 Euros
every extra hour is 4 Euro afterwards.

Get your bike at one of the many bike-stations ( most of them are close to tourist-attractions in the centre ) and give it back at ANY station, so you need NOT go back, where you started.

When your bike is stolen - you have to pay 600 Euros.

The link below is just in German, BUT the way I understand it, it will not work with a foreign ATM-card !!
    -------------------------------------------------------------
Last year a similar company started with bikes that you could rent for a DEPOSIT of 1 Euro and get back the money...

...BUT 99% of the customers did not return the bike and lost that 1 Euro that way.

;-)) I could have told them in advance !!

Getting TO/AROUND: The " Kaiserpavillion " was once built especially for the emperor Franz Joseph, so he may take the subway and have his very own station.

He used it ONLY ONCE !

Today it is a small museum, open only in the afternoon and most people will pass by without noticing.

On my pic :The subway station Hietzing with the platform for the ordinary people , and on the top the pavillion of the emperor, to be entered from outside only today !

Getting TO/AROUND: This is Schoenbrunnerstrasse by night . On the right the walls of the castle and the station of the Kaiser with a special baldachin-entrance, where the Kaiser could enter his carriages, as there was ONLY ONE place, the Kaiser would go walking....

Even the streetlights were made in a special way, just for the emperor

Getting TO/AROUND: rent a " Fiaker " in order to make a sightseeing tour of Vienna
Such a Fiaker-ride will be rather expensive, so you better ask for the price first.

Different " types " of carriages are offered:
The one on my pic is mainly for Marriages and rides in autumn and spring, when the weather is not always warm enough for one of the more common totally open carriages.

Getting TO/AROUND: When you don't have a Eurail,Interrail-ticket etc. yet and intend to go by train from Vienna to Salzburg, Graz, Hallstatt etc - and when you are still under 26 years of age it makes sense to buy a "VORTEILScard <26" !
It is a ticket that you may get at any train-station. You pay 19,90 Euros, bring a passport-pic and will first get an interim-paper ticket, later by mail you get something looking like a credit card. Already the paper ticket entitles you to buy and use tickets for half-fare right away!!
On the distance Vienna-Salzburg you may save around 19,90 Euros one-way already !! because the ordinary ticket is 39,80.
This ticket makes sense for any tourist under 25 years planning to travel by train in Austria!!
In case that you have no permanent address in Austria, where they could send the final ticket, give them your hotel address, a friends-address etc. - it will take several weeks until you get the final card, BUT you have to have an address ready, otherwise the counter might refuse to sell that ticket.
That ticket is valid for 365 days and you might even use it again in your next vacation in Austria.
