  • Restaurant Name: Palatschinkenpfandl

"Palatschinke" is the austrian name for pancake and in this restaurant you get a really wide choice of them, including one of the best "Kaiserschmarren" I ever had. This restaurant is in the very centre of Vienna, in a side-street without car-trafic and it also has tables in the street during summer !! There are 2 entrances to that restaurant : one in Koellnerhofgasse and one in Grashofgasse4
All dishes are explained in English and French as well !
The restaurant is open daily 10.00a.m.-00.00 midnight
10 minutes of Free internet for each guest !!
ask for the internet-coin at the kitchen !!

Favorite Dish: Palatschinkenpfandl has a large choice of dishes, including 6-8 "Tagesmenues" with a main course + the choice of one of 5 deserts or 5 types of soup and of course you may get it also with soup+desert. Take a look at my pictures : I had a delicious pumkin-soup first (without pic) then a pan full of roasted potatoes, fried turkey&chicken & salad and for desert I had 2 pancakes, filled with sweet chestnuts and chocolate-topping. Such a "Tagesmenu" is 10,50 Euros , when you choose any soup OR desert with it !
When you choose desert PLUS soup, you pay just 12 Euros.
Kaiserschmarren is my favorite meal, it is some sort of "thick pancake" with raisins and cut into small pieces - I had mine with "Zwetschken-roester" (thick plum-stew) for 7 Euros - see my main picture !
They have a total of 8 different "Kaiserschmarren" : with apples, cinnamon, poppy-seeds etc.etc.etc.
For drinks you may get also Milk, milkshakes, yoghurt and some great austrian wines in addition to the ordinary soft-drinks and beers.

Kaffeehaus: The cafe with the most beautiful ambiente

  • Cafe in Kunsthistorisches Museum
  • by globetrott , 4 more photos

  • Restaurant Name: Cafe in KUNSThistorisches Museum

This cafe and restaurant INside the Kunsthistorisches museum is a Must for its great architecture and for great cakes & dishes ! The cafe is situated right under the big dome and that way it might be the most beautiful place to have a coffee in Austria !
Prices are a bit higher than in an ordinary cafe, BUT the quality is also very good and the architecture is for free. Unfortunately there is NO way to get to this place without having payed the entrance-fee for the museum first !! There is a similar cafe in Naturhistorisches Museum, but the architecture is a tiny bit less ornate.

Favorite Dish: The Cafe in Kunsthistorisches Museum is a good place to taste austrian cakes : my favorite was Esterhazy-Torte : a cake with hazlenut-filling and on top it has a glazing of white sugar with a chocolate-pattern in it. Coffee is made "the austrian way" strong and with a foam on top.
Every thursday between 06.30p.m. and 10.00p.m.
you may taste there a large buffet of Viennese specialities:
hors d'oevres, hot meals and sweet Austrian deserts
for a fixed price of 34 Euros per person
Eat what-ever you like & as much as you can
That price does NOT include the ticket to the museum!!
Make reservations at their telephone/fax-number below !!

  • Restaurant Name: Cafe in NATURhistorisches Museum

The architecture of the dome above Cafe in Naturhistorisches Museum is a bit less ornate than the one in Kunsthistorisches Museum, and still it is a really great place to have a break after exploring the museum. It is just a pity, you have to pay the entrance-fee to the museum first, in order to get to that cafe. On your way to the cafe you will also pass by the favorite dog of empress Maria-Theresia - see my picture !
Don't miss the giant crabs next to the cafe !!
They are NOT on the menu !
BUT on exhibition next to the tables of the cafe !!

Favorite Dish: Dobosch-Torte was my favorite cake there, it is made of thin layers of cake alternating with thin layers of chocolate and it has a top of glazed sugar . The choice of cakes is really great in that cafe and mostly you will find empty tables quite easily !

    Cafe Hawelka
  • Tip Rating:
  • Written by globetrott on Jan 26, 2003

  • Hawelka is a typical Kaffeehaus in Vienna and generations of students came here to study....

And Kaffeehaus does not necessarily mean Coffe and cakes but it is a sort of " living in public " having coffee, lots of glasses of fresh water ( free of charge and taken to the table without a bad word )
the famous " Buchteln " shortly after midnight, cooked by Fr.Hawelka

Favorite Dish: And in a Kaffehaus like Hawelka there are 5 or 6 chairs around a table that would take 4 chairs in any other restaurant.
And you may take as many seats as you need, but EVERY empty seat might be taken by somebody else and that way you get company easily...

I know some people who spent the whole days of their student-live here in Hawelka...

  • Kleines Cafe

its another great Kaffehaus mainly for students but also a place were to meet artists or actors.

It once belonged to Hanno Pöschl - maybe it still does - and he was seen also there helping behind the bar, at least 20 years ago, when I used to frequent this Cafe quite often

Favorite Dish: My favorite dish was:
    Tomatenbrot - simply delicious !!!

dark bread with a thick layer of butter and thick slices of tomatoes...

  • Restaurant Name: Gloriette - Cafe

This is a great restaurant/Cafe inside the Gloriette of Schönbrunn - palace

It is absolutely worth that 20 minutes you might need to walk from the Schloss Schönbrunn a bit uphill in order to have coffee in the Gloriette and see that great view over Vienna

Favorite Dish: They serve a great breakfast and wonderful , typical Vienniese cakes and deserts

  • Restaurant Name: Hotel Sacher

Favorite Dish: Sachertorte is certainly the most famous cake of Austria.
The original recepee came from Hotel Sacher and there you still may taste it or have it sent all over the world in their small souvenirshop in Kärntnerstrasse.
    .
Sachertorte is a chocolate-sponge-cake with a soft chocolate glacing...
    .
Btw,don't tell anyone in Hotel Sacher that the english expression for their cake is "Sponge-cake" ;-))

    Demel: Demel - K&K Hofzuckerbäckerei
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Updated by globetrott on Nov 1, 2005

  • Restaurant Name: Demel

Demel was the official backery of the emperor and who-ever delivered some of his goods/products to the court was allowed to call himself
    K&K Hoflieferant*
    or K&K Hofzuckerbaecker etc.

Favorite Dish: They are certainly worth a visit: for a hot chocolate they will not take an instant-mix but will boil the milk slowly and put in pieces of chocolate and stirr, until finished and they also have the original Sachertorte-recepee - and are allowed to call it "original Sachertorte" as the mentally sick son of Madame Sacher sold the original recepee to Demel about 100 years ago and it looks a bit different, as the thin layer of jam is missing in Demel' recepee...

Since may 2003 there is a bagel station in Vienna, close to the University and Votivkirche.
It is not at all my kind of food, but it might be good to know for tourists, where to get them.

    Favorite Dish: Bagels,Bagels,Bagels, what else...

I have to admit, my favorite thing about this restaurant is the great house-entrance next to it.
Click on my picture to see the great sculptures !!

Demel: Maybe the very best confectionary in Vienna
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Updated by globetrott on Nov 1, 2005

  • Restaurant Name: Demel K&K Hofzuckerbaeckerei

Demel is certainly the best confectionary in Vienna and on 1st floor (USA: 2nd floor) they even have a fine (and also really expensive) restaurant. When-ever you visit Hofburg, take a look at the always changing decorations in the windows of Demel as well, the distance to Hofburg is just about 100 meters !!

Favorite Dish: When you cannot afford their prices, you should at least have a look for their wonderfully decorated windows - normally all decorations are made of chocolate and sugar.
Inside they have a wonderful cake-buffet, certainly the best variety of cakes in Austria and if you speak German, you will recognize, the staff is speaking the old language, spoken at the emperor's time :
    .
    ...Haben schon gewählt ?
    ...Haben noch einen Wunsch ???
    .
"Sie" is always missing...It sounds really funny !!
