a great place for a beer - Vienna

a great place for a beer

Centimeter II: Good beers and great food

Centimeter II is a great place to taste austrian food and have a good choice of beers.
Take your time and have a look for the great posters and old-fashioned signs in the front of the restaurant / inn as well before you enter the restaurant.

Favorite Dish: Different to most of the other inns in Austria, where they serve only the beer of one company, you will be able to choose among various different brands of beers in this place !

Address: Wien7 , Siebensterngasse 18

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: This ínn is close to Mariahilferstrasse and Stiftskaserne / Stiftgasse in the area of Spittelberg.

Demel - the K&K Hofzuckerbaecker - Vienna

Demel - the K&K Hofzuckerbaecker

Demel K&K Hofzuckerbaeckerei: Demel - the K&K Hofzuckerbaecker Demel Review

Thats another decoration of " Demel K&K Hofzuckerbaeckerei" and behind the statue you will see the famous Kaffeehaus of Demel. The best about Demel is the great cake-buffet and the lovely ornate decorations of the whole cafe with lovely stucco-works and chandeliers - see my pics !.

Favorite Dish: all these decorations are made of chocolate and colored sugar and in my personal opinion the faces look better than most of the celebrities at the famous Wax-cabinets.

Address: A-1010 Wien / Kohlmarkt

Directions: Walk towards the end of Kohlmarkt and Demel will be on the right. Kohlmarkt is the small street in the pedestrian area, connecting Graben with the Hofburg.

Esterhazykeller - Vienna

Esterhazykeller

Esterhazykeller: where J.Haydn was composing

Esterhazykeller is a lovely restaurant and "Heuriger" in the old part of Vienna AND it is a place with a famous history behind it: Fuerst Esterhazy sent a lot of his troops to defend Vienna against the turques in 1683 and he built Esterhazy-Keller in order to serve free wine from his vinyards in Burgenland to his soldiers, because he found out that the soldiers were a lot more motivated to fight after they got some wine ;-)
You may see a painting of that time still in the restaurant, Since that time Esterhazy-keller is quite a popular place to dine and taste the wine of Burgenland. Of course they serve beer as well, and the food you may order at the counter, it is cheap and tasty.
Josef Haydn was working as a composer and conductor for Fuerst Esterhazy and he spent many hours in that restaurant to get his inspirations...

Esterhazykeller is open daily !
Monday-Friday : 11.00a.m. till 11.00p.m.
Saturday & Sunday from 04.00-11.00p.m.

Favorite Dish: I may recommend "Blunzn" - (blood-sausage) for the "daring" gourmets or
Wiener Schnitzel for the traditional tourist, as well as for the local people. In fact you hardly will find a lot of tourists there.

Address: A-1010 Wien - Haarhof

Comparison: about average

Directions: When walking from Stephansdom to the end of Graben, on the right of "Julius Meinl" take the tiny "Naglergasse", after 100 meters Haarhof is a tiny street on the left.

bagels, bagels, bagels - Vienna

bagels, bagels, bagels

Bagel station Vienna: Bagel station - if you cannot live without

Since May 2003 there is a bagel station in Vienna, close to the University and Votivkirche. It is not at all my kind of food, but it might be good to know for tourists, where to get them. I also made this tip, because I could read on another page about Vienna, that you cannot get any bagels in Vienna at all !

Favorite Dish: Bagels,Bagels,Bagels, what else...

I have to admit, my favorite thing about this restaurant is the great house-entrance next to it.
Click on my picture to see the great sculptures !!

Address: Wien , Waehringer Strasse 4

Directions: Just opposite of the university and not far from Votivkirche.

Demel: Demel - K&K Hofzuckerbäckerei Demel Review

Demel was the official backery of the emperor and who-ever delivered some of his goods/products to the court was allowed to call himself

K&K Hoflieferant*
or K&K Hofzuckerbaecker etc.

Favorite Dish: They are certainly worth a visit: for a hot chocolate they will not take an instant-mix but will boil the milk slowly and put in pieces of chocolate and stirr, until finished and they also have the original Sachertorte-recepee - and are allowed to call it "original Sachertorte" as the mentally sick son of Madame Sacher sold the original recepee to Demel about 100 years ago and it looks a tiny little bit different, as the thin layer of jam is missing in Demel' recepee...

Address: Kohlmarkt - next to Hofburg

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: When you walk from Graben towards the end of Kohlmarkt, Demel will be on the right. Kohlmarkt is the small street in the pedestrian area, connecting Graben with the Hofburg.

Hotel Sacher: Sachertorte Sacher Review

For a very long time Hotel Sacher was well-known for the fact that NOBODY was allowed to enter their Hotel-Bar without a tie - and they kicked out celebrities as well as everybody else that way. NOWADAYS they have also a garden-restaurant right in front of their hotel, where they serve tourists as well and dont care much about their outfits !

Favorite Dish: Sachertorte is certainly the most famous cake of Austria.
The original recepee came from Hotel Sacher and there you still can taste it or have it sent all over the world in their small souvenirshop in Kärntnerstrasse.
Sachertorte is a chocolate-sponge-cake with a soft chocolate glacing...

Address: Kärntnerstrasse / Staatsoper

Directions: Hotel Sacher and the cafe Sacher are opposite of the Opera, at the beginning of Kaerntner Strasse.

Gloriette - Cafe: Gloriette - Cafe Kaffeehaus Review

Gloriette - Cafe is a great restaurant/Cafe inside the Gloriette of Schönbrunn - palace
It is absolutely worth that 20 minutes that you might need to walk from the Schloss Schönbrunn a bit uphill in order to have some coffee in the Gloriette and see that great view over Vienna from their cafe or terrace.

Favorite Dish: They serve a great breakfast and wonderful , typical Viennese cakes and deserts !

Address: In the park of Schoenbrunn/Schönbrunn

Directions: The Gloriette - Cafe is inside the Schloßpark of Schloss Schoenbrunn - to be seen from far away already.

Kleines Cafe: a tiny cafe Kaffeehaus Review

Kleines Cafe is another great Kaffehaus mainly for students but also a place were to meet artists or actors. It once belonged to Hanno Pöschl - maybe it still does - and he was seen also there helping behind the bar, at least 20 years ago, when I used to frequent this Cafe quite often.

Favorite Dish: My favorite dish was:
Tomatenbrot - simply delicious !!!
dark bread with a thick layer of butter and thick slices of tomatoes...

Address: Franziskanerplatz

Directions: Kleines Cafe is about 300 meters from Stephansdom, on Franziskanerplatz.

Cafe in Haturhistorisches Museum - Vienna

Cafe in Haturhistorisches Museum

Cafe in NATURhistorisches Museum: a great cafe in a special surrounding Kaffeehaus Review

The architecture of the dome above Cafe in Naturhistorisches Museum is a bit less ornate than the one in Kunsthistorisches Museum, and still it is a really great place to have a break after exploring the museum. It is just a pity, you have to pay the entrance-fee to the museum first, in order to get to that cafe. On your way to the cafe you will also pass by the favorite dog of empress Maria-Theresia - see my picture !

Don't miss the giant crabs next to the cafe !!
They are NOT on the menu !
BUT on exhibition next to the tables of the cafe !!

Favorite Dish: Dobosch-Torte was my favorite cake there, it is made of thin layers of cake alternating with thin layers of chocolate and it has a top of glazed sugar . The choice of cakes is really great in that cafe and mostly you will find empty tables quite easily !

Address: A-1010 Wien Maria-Theresien-Platz 1

Comparison: about average

Directions: This cafe is on the 1st floor of Naturhistorisches Museum - directely above the ticket-counter and below the large dome.

Price: less than US$10
