"Rosa's Special" in Tea-Room Ringgenberg - Switzerland

"Rosa's Special" in Tea-Room Ringgenberg

Tea-Room Ringgenberg in Grindelwald: Buendner Fleisch & Hobelkaese

I had a great "swiss dinner" at the end of a busy hiking-day in Grindelwald. While walking back to the train-station I found this great place for a dinner-break:
Tea Room Ringgenberg is a small restaurant that is included in a bakery and because it it convenientely located on the Mainstreet , not far from the station, I had dinner there and tried "Rosa's Special"
Take a look at their web-page, they even have a delivery-service for swiss specialities !
And as you may see on my picture, you first get a small place-mat with the great mountain-panorama on it, you may take it home as a souvenir !

Favorite Dish: I had "Rosa's Special" that is described at the menu as follows:
3 varieties of fresh and fragrant bread, served with selected Grindelwald mountain-cheese and with cured beef and pork meat.
And I had "Cafe Lutz" with it : thin coffee with brandy
Buendnerfleisch is the name of the cured beef
Hobelkaese is the thinly sliced mature cheese, that is served rolled.

Address: CH-3818 Grindelwald Hauptstrasse

Comparison: about average

Directions: Tea-Room Ringgenberg is opposite of Hotel Spinne, in a distance of about 200 meters from the train-station Grindelwald

the smallest Whiskybar on earth - Switzerland
In Hotel Palazzo Mysanus: the smallest Whiskybar on earth

For all fans of Whiskey it might be a good idea to take a look into Hotel Palazzo Mysanus in Samedan / Samaden, that was built into a building dating back to the year 1624. This hotel and restaurant offers a lot of music-events, just take a look at their webpage and I also saw this signpost for the smallest whiskey-bar on earth, it was not open when I was there and I am also not drinking whiskey, but I thought it might be a good idea to mention it here on VT.

Favorite Dish:

The smallest Whiskeybar on earth

what a great panorama ! - Switzerland
Berghaus Diavolezza: what a great panorama !

This is the restaurant (and they have a hotel as well) of the Diavolezza in a hight of 2990 meters above sealevel. There is a large restaurant inside and a big terrace, where you can sit and enjoy the view of the glacier. Like at many other mountain-restaurants in Switzerland there is also an area with seats and tables for tourists, who come with their own meals in the rucksack and are searching for a place to make a picknick.

Taste Buendner CAPUNS in Andeer - Switzerland

Taste Buendner CAPUNS in Andeer

Hotel Restaurant Post in Andeer: Taste Buendner CAPUNS !

Hotel Restaurant Post in Andeer is a small restaurant and hotel that you will pass by when driving from Thusis towards the San Bernardino-pass on the ordinary road. They have a nice gardenrestaurant and moderate prices and lots of parkingspaces free of charge closeby. (that is quite unusual for Switzerland)
Take a look at my 4th pic : the cutlery does not come wrapped up in a napkin like many other places do it, but it is elegantly served inside that napkin-purse, thats great and much more hygienical.

Favorite Dish: Buendner CAPUNS is a traditional dish of the area of Graubuenden:
Airdryed Beef and mangold will be rolled around Spaetzle-dough and put into a dish with Bouillon. Then it will be overbaked with cheese
The price was 22 sfr (= 14 euros)
Well, the portion could have been bigger, but it really tasted fine and I can highly recommend it to everybody.
This is the description in german :
Spaetzleteig mit Trockenfeisch und Mangold umwickelt,
in Bouillon und mit Käse überbacken
Buendner Pizokels is something that I have to try there the next time !

Address: CH-4700 Andeer

Comparison: about average

Directions: When coming from Thusis skip the 1st entrance of the village and go in the 2nd one.

they serve Fondue also for just 1 person - Switzerland
Restaurant Bären in Unterseen: they serve Fondue also for just 1 person

When you travel in Switzerland and would like to taste the famous local Cheese-Fondue you will soon find out that most restaurants will serve it for parties of at least 2 persons. Thank heavens that is not the case in this lovely restaurant in Interlaken.
Hotel Baeren is a beautiful and romantic restaurant and the building dates back to 1674 - see some pics of the great interior on their webpage !
Hotel Baeren in Unterseen (the old part of Interlaken, north of the river Aare) has a great local restaurant with great swiss specialities. You will not meet plenty of tourists there, but plenty of local people who know, where to go !

Favorite Dish: Cheese fondue is mostly served for a minimum of 2 persons. Fondue is a melted mixture of different kinds of cheeses and it is served in a pot.Small cubes of bread are taken by long fondue-forks and dipped into the fondue.Tastes fine - but if you have a nervous stomach - better don't take too much. Also: drink a lot of tea or white wine and brandy with it.
Normally you get fondue only for a minimum of 2 persons, BUT in restaurant Baeren you may get it also for just 1 person - and have to pay just 3 sfr extra ! Preparing the fondue is quite a lot of work and needs a lot of attention by the cook and it is served in a pot that is kept warm by an open flame... all of this done for just 1 single portion certainly deserves such a small extra-amount. At other places single tourists would have to order and pay for 2 full portions !

Address: CH-3800 Unterseen - Seestrasse 2

Comparison: about average

Directions: You simply walk from Interlaken West-station across the river Aare to the north - at the 1st big crossing you cross the street - the restaurant is directely at the crossing, where the streets turns left to "Neuhaus"

My favorite place to eat - Switzerland
MIGROS at Interlaken WEST: My favorite place to eat

MIGROS-restaurants are my favorite place to eat in Switzerland, when I am in a hurry or have to care for my budget (and mostly I have to!)
MIGROS with their self-service-restaurants all over Switzerland are always a very good choice to eat a good meal for a reasonable price. The MIGROS in Interlaken is directely opposite of the station Interlaken-WEST.
These restaurants are also a good place to read the newspapers that they have on free display or to warm up on a cold or rainy day. Mostly you will not be chased away by the servants, when you just sit at a table without consuming anything and the tables are not urgently needed for ther guests.

Favorite Dish: I had a great lunch there and they have a hot buffet with all sorts of fried fishes, meat, chicken... and a warm buffet of french-fries, rices, vegetables etc. - at the end you have to pay 2,60 sfr for every 100 gramms.
For desert you may try "Rueblitorte" - a cake made of carrots !

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: The MIGROS supermarket and self-service-restaurant is opposite of the station Interlaken-West, you cannot miss it !

a cheap and tasty self-service - Switzerland
COOP Interlaken OST: a cheap and tasty self-service

When money matters - and in the swiss price-levels it mostly does - it is best to search for COOP- or MIGROS- selfservice-restaurants. In Interlaken OST there is a very good one just opposite of the train-station Interlaken Ost and it has its own self-service-restaurant on 1st floor (USA:2nd floor).
While I had parked my motorhome not far from there, I had my breakfast there most of the days.
Something special in COOP and also in MIGROS-restaurants :
You may read the daily newspapers there for free and will not totally loose the contact to the catastrophies all over the world, while hiking and relaxing in Switzerland...

Favorite Dish: Take a look at my pictures - I had a "cafe creme", 2 "Brienzer Mütschli" - my favorite kind of rolls and 2 pieces of cheese and I payed just 7 sfr / 5 Euros.
They have quite a big choice of breads, rolls, croissants, cheeses etc. and of course you may get ham& eggs and similar dishes as well.
In october 2005 they also had a lottery with each bill in the restaurant and I won several "Berliner" , some sort of a small donut, that made a great desert after breakfast.

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: get out of the train-station Interlaken-Ost and walk across the road to get to COOP. There are plenty of parking-spaces as well.

Grand-Cafe Schuh in Interlaken - Switzerland

Grand-Cafe Schuh in Interlaken

Grand-Cafe Schuh: for your sweet tooth

This excellent Tea-room / Confiserie / Restaurant is not at all a cheap place for ordinary tourists, but rather a place to spend the afternoon and enjoy cakes, coffee and piano-music. Restaurant "Schuh" is located at the corner of HÖHEMATTE, and from the garden-restaurant you will see the famous mountain-view of the Jungfrau.
Plenty of years ago I was working there for a summer-season, and when I returned in 2005 it did not have changed a lot : There is still a pianist playing in the afternoon and the evening, you still have to choose your cakes at the counter umong a giant buffet of different cakes, pastries and chocolates and take them to your table yourself, while the drinks are served by the waiters.
Something new to me was the chocolate-show, where you may watch the production of fine chocolates daily at 4,5,and 6 p.m. The entrance-fee to that performance is 10 sfr and you will get a voucher in that amount and may change it against some of their sweet souvenirs...

Favorite Dish: This is really the best place I have ever seen, regarding production of cakes, fine chocolates, petit fours, ornamental chocolates of all kinds - just watch the great windows with chocolate-ornaments or figures, chess-plays with all figures made of chocolate...

Address: CH-3800 Interlaken - Höhenweg 56

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: Restaurant & Cafe "Schuh" is opposit of hotel Metropole (the only sky-scraper in Interlaken ) and at the west-end of Hoehematte.

powder your nose at Weberhuette - Switzerland

powder your nose at Weberhuette

Berghaus Maenndlenen-Weberhuette: Goulash-soup in the mountains

Berghaus Maenndlenen-Weberhuette is the 1st restaurant that you may reach, when taking the hike from Schynige Platte. When you start right after breakfast and take the first train to Schynige Platte, you will be at Weberhuette shortly before lunchtime.
Under the roof this restaurant has also a few matresses for rent - see my hotel-tips !
The scenery is great and make sure, you will not miss that romantic place to powder your nose !!
Berghaus Maendlenen-Weberhuette is open Mid June-mid October

Favorite Dish: The dishes that are offered on the menu are quite simple, and so I had a strong goulasch-soup and Rauchwurst mit Brot (smoked sausage with bread).
It tasted really fine and prices were reasonable !
That smoked sausage was quite hard, but it was served with a sharp knife and they would sell sausages, cheese and bread also for our lunch-boxes.

Comparison: about average

Directions: Restaurant Maenndlenen-Weberhuette is about 3 hours from Schynigge Platte and 3,5 hours from First. You have to hike there !
