  • Fristaden Christiania / Freestate of Christiania started as a Hippy-colony on an empty island opposite of the cruise-port of Kopenhagen. In 1971 the empty island was occupied by some hippies and they defended their status untill 1986, when their status was officially recognized by the city of Kopenhagen. They follow their own rules of "freedom" also using drugs etc. but on the other hand this freedom does not go so far, that you are allowed to take any pics...

Off The Beaten Path: Rundetaarn / the round tower of Copenhagen

  • Christian IV had the idea to build this interesting tower in 1637. It was ment as an observation-tower and something unique is the fact, that there are absolutely no steps to climb up that tower, but instead there is a winding road going up there inside the tower, so the king was able to ride up on the horseback.
Nowadays the tourists walk up there, it is easy and a lot of fun and the view is also quite nice,on a clear day you may even see the Oeresund-bridge in a distance.
In combination with the round tower there is also an astronomical observatory,a library and a church.
Rundetaarn / the round tower is in Koebmagergade 52a
    There is an entrance-fee of 25 DK-kronen
in winter the tower is open :
    10.00a.m.-05.00p.m. at weedays
on sunday it opens at noon !
Between june 1st and september 20th
it is open at the same schedule, but untill 10.00p.m.

Off The Beaten Path: Vor Freslers Kirke - Church of the Saviour

  • Kopenhagen is a great place to see fancy spires - like the one of Vor Freslers Kirke - Church of the Saviour :
This church in Christianshavn was built in about 1750 and 400 steps are leading to the top of the spire, where you will have a great view over the city
What an idea to build the stairs outside in a great spiral - no bad idea in a country with only a bit of snow falling in winter

Off The Beaten Path: Dronningslund palace

  • Dronninglund, in the northern part of Danmark is the castle / palace, where the Danish royal family came from and nowadays their former palace is used as a luxury hotel. Dont miss to take a look inside the church nearby, it looks very interesting with great wooden decorations, frescos and paintings.
When you start early in the morning from Arhus Dronningslund might be a good place for an early lunch, before you drive on northwards in order to get to Skagen at the tip of Danmark, where the Sakgerrak meets the Kattegat...
Take the highway E45 to the north. Dronninglund is about 80km south of Skagen

Off The Beaten Path: Bagenkop on the island of Langeland

  • Bagenkop on the south-end of the island of Langeland is another village we visited first in 1964, having been invited there by a cousin of my mother. In the year 2000 I returned there and I think that Bagenkop might also be an interesting place to go for ordinary tourists, who care for lovely landscapes and a quiet vacation.
My favorite building was the church, where you may also see a sailing-boat hanging down from the ceiling, in order to get a safe return of the fishermen of Bagenkop. The husband of our relative was one of them, beeing out on the open sea fishing for several weeks, so we actually never met him.

Off The Beaten Path: Overandlef / Over Randlef

  • Over Randlef is a small village close to Arhus and it has many interesting old buildings and halftimbered houses in the old town-centre. It is another place of importance in the history of the danish part of my family. We were searching for tomb-stones of the Rassmussen-family there (but unfortunately the old part of the cemetery was taken away some time ago)
YOU might be interested in the giant farmhouse next to the small church of Overrandlef. Just enlarge my pictures and see that great half-timbered house that is partly even thatched by straw. Everything looks so clean and beautiful and you may walk through the courtyard freely and without restrictions, the building is obviously used by the church today.
Overrandlef / Over Randlef is just a few km south of Arhus : Take the road #451 to Odder, Overrandlef is the next village south of Odder.

  • Randers is a small town close to Aarhus and we took a little walk through the old town with lovely architecture and interesting buildings. In general you will see wide areas of modern houses in the outskirts of danish towns, the centre is mostly full of lovely half-timbered houses.
Randers is one of the small towns close to Aarhus, that we used to visit in order to search for old adresses, that we had found in the family-documents and as adresses of old letters, that my mother had in her posession. My grandmother was the youngest of 16 children, some of them immigrated to USA and some of the elder brothers never saw or met her younger sister (my grandma).
Randers is in the north of Arhus : Take the highway E45, it goes directely to Randers and might make another stop-over on your way to Skagen.

Off The Beaten Path: The Faroe-islands

  • The Faroe-islands are part of Danmark as well, although they are listed like an independant state on VT. I came several times to these remote islands, when-ever our cruise-ship M/S Vistafjord was on her way to Iceland. You may see this great cruiseship, where I was working for more than 4 years, on my main picture, anchored off the Faroe islands close to the famous rock "The Hag"
Some of the houses of Thorshavn are covered with grass, the climate is quite rough but still under influence of the golf-stream.

I have to confess that I neglected Denmark outside Copenhagen a bit despite of my numerous visits (mostly passing DK on the way to the other Nordic countries - they have Schengen-like passport rules since the early Sixties of last century.
