  • Wilhelmsbau is a different museum, next to the technical museum in Speyer.
It has several different collections like this one of mechanical musical instruments and clocks with musical mechanism.
Most of them date back o the 17th and 18th century.
There are as well collections of old fashions, signposts, helmets, juke-boxes etc.etc.etc.
    --------------------------------------------------------------

  • Look at these interesting wooden chairs , made in the shape of eagels.
These chairs are the highlights in a room, filled with a lot of hunting-trophees under roof of the museum.
Unfortunately you may not really enter that room, but have to look through a window

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Inside the so-called "Wilhelmsbau" you may see a very big collection of hats, helmets and uniforms of the last 4 centuries and in my opinion this one is the most beautiful and special one, simply as I wonder how someone could work as a guard and carry such a heavy helmet at the same time.
It is really impressive anyway and maybe ment and carried only for special parades and events.
this helmet was used at the prussian court between 1871 and 1918.
In the museum you may also see a member of these guards on an old painting or photo behind the exhibit - just click on my picture.

Local Customs: Wilhelmsbau - for the "young at heart"

  • You may see a big collection of old toys, teddies, toy-trains, miniature-cars, dolls and doll-houses etc. etc. etc.

It is funny to see that these things somehow never get really out of the mind of someone, staying young at heart , and many things that you knew only from brochures and because other children had it - here you may meet your childhood's dreams again...

...and once again locked away by a saftey-glass :-(((

This wonderful Museum of childhood dreams is also in "Wilhelmsbau" , a seperate small museum, belonging to the Technik Museum, but inside a different building, close to the "Hotel am Technik Museum."
You will not need to pay a seperate entrance-fee. It will be included in the ticket of the big technical Museum.

  • Look at this beautiful juke-box / Wurlitzer dating back to the early days of Rock and roll, the Beatles, Buddy Holly, Elvis etc. etc. etc.
In the 50s and 60s they were very common in restaurants and bars, and you could throw in a coin and all of the bar had to listen to YOUR favorite music....
NO escape for them !! :-))
It was already great to see the artificial arm choosing the black disc umong various different titles you may have choosen and putting it on the plate, and the needle was coming down, starting your favorite music...

...and then you simply had to make sure nobody else would be able to choose HIS kind of music, so you better stay at the juke-box all the time, putting in coin after coin...

There are about 15 such juke-boxes in Wilhelmsbau !!

  • Click on my picture and have a look for all of the great collectables of the 1950s and 1960s !
Juke-boxes / Wurlitzer and even one of the great portable grammophones on the right of my picture.
And these great bathing-suits in the back, bringing back great memories....
Many of the rooms in Wilhelmsbau are filled with stuff like that, things that other people simply threw away, were taken out of the garbage, cleaned and beautifully restored and finally shown behind a big glasswall in the Museum.

  • In Wilhelmsbau you may see one of the biggest existing collections of mechanical music instruments.
In the first moment some of them look like a piano, but in fact they are able to perform their music without a skilled pianist, you simply have to switch it on.
The sound-carriers are pin cylindres, metal-plates or paper-rolls operating the sound-sources directely or by means of pneumatic controls.

  • Don't miss the big collection of thousands of small-sized models of cars, ships, trains, spacecrafts and buildings, most of them made by hand by scale-down-model enthousiasts who very often invested hundreds of hours in order to build their small works of art.
And finally they gave them as a loan to the museum, so everybody could see and enjoy them.
My favorite were the ships-models of course and a model of the cathedral of Speyer.

Local Customs: Wilhelmsbau - uniforms, swords & guns

  • This is a policeman in the good old times with a so-called "Pickelhaube" ( the strange kind of Helmet with a knob on top ). It was the time, when a sword was still a part of the daily uniform of the officers.

Fans of old weapons and swords might enjoy the big collections of them in the Museum in Wilhelmsbau.
The biggest part of all of the exhibits that you may see in Wilhelmsbau had been collected by Frida and Erwin Winkler, factury owners from Speyer, who started to collect these things and restore them a long time ago, when other people just threw away everything old...

A very interesting and informative page on a city that I ignored. I have bookmarked it as I feel that both the city, the Technik Museum and the Historisches Museum der Pfalz are must see!
