Off The Beaten Path: VW Schwimmwagen 166 of 1941

The VW Schwimmwagen was a special type of the much more common "Kübelwagen", and it was able to swim. Not really in rough waters, but when-ever the water was rather calm, it was able to drive into a river like the Danube or Rhine and go across without any help.
It had a ship-screw at the back of the car and could go a top-speed of 6 knots inside the water.
The car had all-wheel-drive and by the generous ground-clearence it was a great car for all terrains.
When you see the car inside the museum, just have a look for the extra equipment :
a spade fixed on one side and a paddle at the other side.

Der VW Schwimmwagen ( Typ 128 oder 166 )war eine besondere Ausführung des weit mehr gebräuchlichen VW Kübelwagen.
Für hohen Wellengang war der Schwimmwagen leider nicht zu gebrauchen, bei ruhigem Wasser aber konnte man mit ihm selbständig den Rhein oder die Donau überqueren.
Der Vierradantrieb und die hohe Bodenfreiheit verhalfen zu einer erstaunlichen Geländegängigkeit.
Hinten am Fahrzeug gab es eine herunterklappbare Schiffschraube und als Standart-Ausrüstung einen Spaten und ein Paddel, jeweils seitlich am Fahrzeug und griffbereit montiert.
Die Geschwindigkeit im Wasser betrug etwa 6 Knoten.

Off The Beaten Path: "The tree" by Rüdiger Neberg

This is another one of my favorite exhibits in the Technik Museum in Speyer :
"The tree" was a project by Rüdiger Neberg from Hamburg, in order to fight for the preservation of the rain-forest and the survival of the Yanomani-Indians in the Amazonas region.
The boat was made in the year 2000 by a 350 years old Swiss silver fir-tree, 18 meters long and with a weight of 12 tons.
The trunk was partly filled with foamed cavities and fitted with 2 outriggers and it had only a small sail and a tiny hut with a lot of fresh-water-tanks fixed around it.
Neberg needed 43 days ( 7 days of which he did not have any wind at all) to get from Mauretania to Brazil
Before that Rüdiger Neberg had crossed the Atlantic already once by pedal-boat and once by bamboo-raft and could achiev a certain protection for the Yanomani-Indians and their environment in the Amazonas by law !

"The Tree" war ein Projekt des "Überlebenskünstlers" und Umwelt-Aktivisten Rüdiger Neberg, um auf die Bedrohung der Yanomani-Indianer am Amazonas aufmerksam zu machen.
Eine 350 Jahre alte Schweizer Weisstanne, 18 meter lang und 12 Tonnen schwer wurde teilweise ausgehöhlt und ausgeschäumt, mit 2 Auslegern versehen, um vor dem Kentern und Sinken zu bewahren.
Nehberg hatte nur eine kleine Kabine zum Wohnen und eine Menge Wassertanks an Bord.
Die Überfahrt vom Mauretanien nach Brasilien dauerte 43 Tage ( einschließlich 7 Tage Flaute)
Zuvor hatte Neberg den Atlantik bereits 1 x im Tretboot und einmal auf einem Bambus-Floss überquert.
er konnte zum Teil Zugeständnisse und einen gewissen Schutz der Yanomani-Indianer bei der Regierung in Brasilien erreichen !

The Aerotrain was an early attempt to test the possibilities of a train, gliding on a small air-cushion of just 5mm.
It is a french development dating back to the year 1957.
The Aerotrain had a Pratt & Whitney jet engine and reached a top-speed of 422 km/h.
The aerotrain follows the pricipals of the transrapid, but while the transrapid was developped further, the Aerotrain was given up quickly...

Der Aerotrain von 1957 ist eine französische Entwicklung. Mit ihm wurde getestet, ob es möglich und rentabel ist, ein Schienenfahrzeug auf einem nur 5mm dünnen Luftpolster dahingleiten zu lassen.
Im Probebetrieb erreichte der Aerotrain eine Geschwindigkeit von 422 km/h mit Hilfe eines Strahltriebwerkes von Pratt & Whitney.
Die Entwicklung wurde als unrentabel eingestellt. - Der Transrapid arbeitet nach demselben Prinzip.

Off The Beaten Path: The Antonov 22 from inside

You may walk inside the giant aircraft and have a look for the big dimensions:
The cargo-hall is 33 meters long and has a width of 4,40 meters.
Inside the cargo-hall you may watch a video about the landing of this aircraft in Speyer airport , were the total length of the runway is 1300 meters and the Antonov needs normally 1040 meters.
Everything went fine and you may buy a copy of that video in the museum-shop.
Don't forget to climb up to the very top of the plane, where a glass-dome gives a 360 degree-panorama-view for one person of the crew for a safe operation & landing of such a big plane.

Die gigantische Ladehalle der Antonov-22 mit einer Länge von 33 metern und einer Breite von 4,40 metern kann man besichtigen.
Dort wird auch ein Video gezeigt, über die Landung der Antonov 22 auf dem kleinen Flughafen in Speyer mit einer Piste von nur 1300 metern (1040 m davon braucht die An-22 normalerweise).
Dieses Viseo kann man auch im shop kaufen.
Interessant ist auch eine Plexiglas-kuppel ganz oben am Flugzeug, die einem Mann der Besatzung einen 360 ° Rundumblick ermöglicht, zum besseren Navigieren der Maschine

Off The Beaten Path: OPEL RAK-2 of 1928

This rocket-car is a replica of the original Opel of 1928 and it is a loan of the Deutsches Museum in Munich.
The car was powered by 24 solid propellant rockets, when Fritz von Opel made an attempt to break the speed-record on the famous AVUS-racetrack in Berlin.
2000 people watched him driving a top-speed of only 230 km/h, while the record was already 334 km/h at that time.
When you click on my picture-combination you may see the side-wings and the rockets in the back of the car.

24 Feststoffraketen sorgten für den Antrieb als am 23.mai 1928 Fritz von Opel auf der Avus-Rennstrecke in Berlin vor 2000 geladenen Gästen versuchte, den Weltrekord von 334 km/h zu übertreffen.
Er erreichte leider nur 230 Km/h.
Zu beachten sind die seitlichen Flügel und die Raketen-Düsen hinten am Fahrzeug !

Off The Beaten Path: Maybach Zeppelin of 1930

The total production of Maybach was not more than only 2000 cars and the Zeppelin was the most luxury and famous of them.
215 cars of that type were built between 1930 and 1940. - 3 of them are shown in Sinsheim and this one in Speyer.
The car had a vacuum controlled power-break and a 5-gear-shift with a vacuum controlled preselection change
The 12 cylindre-engine had 7 litres
150 hp and a maximum-speed of 145 km/h
The price was 30.000 Reichsmark
(a lot more than an ordinary family- house )

Etwa 2000 Autos wurden von Maybach hergestellt. 215 davon waren die berühmtesten und luxuriösesten mit dem Namen Zeppelin, gebaut zwischen 1930 und 1940.
3 Maybach Zeppelin sind im Museum in Sinsheim zu sehen, 1 in Speyer.
dieser Wagen hat eine Servobremse, mit Unterdruck gesteuert, ein Fünfganggetriebe mit ebenso unterdruck-gesteuerter Vorwählschaltung.
Der Wagen hatte 7 Liter und 12 Cylinder
150 PS und eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 145 km/h
Der Preis betrug 30.000 Reichsmark
(Ein Haus mit Garten kostete damals 20.000RM)

Off The Beaten Path: Faun Zugmaschine of 1940

This interesting vehicle is a tractor for streets and rails, dating back to 1940.
This vehicle was a lot less heavy than an ordinary train and could also go on rail-tracks, that were set up quickly during the war.
Tyres could be changed rather quickly against railway-wheels.
This truck had a 6 cylindre-engine
with 13,5 litres and 150 HP

Dieser Faun aus dem Jahre 1940 ist eine kombinierte Zugmaschine für Schiene und Strasse.
Die Gummiräder konnten schnell gegen Schienenräder ausgetauscht werden und bewährt hat sich diese Fahrzeug besonders auf kurzfristig aufgebauten Nachschubstrecken, die viel zu schwach für die Belastung mit herkömmlichen Lokomotiven gewesen wären.
Der 6-Zylinder-Deutz-Diesel
hatte 13,5 liter und 150 PS

The Antonov An-22 is the world's largest propeller-driven aircraft and it is able to haul loads of up to 100 tons and land even in rough territory without a regular runway. It was this type of airplane that was needed to take goods to Sibiria, and it landed by itself in the small airfield of Speyer, just a few hundred meters from the Technik Museum.

Off The Beaten Path: The famous "Rheingold" Pullmann

This very special Pullmann-carriage was constructed for Hitler's Foreign Minister Joachim von Rippentrop, who wanted to have a comfortable carriage, when travelling through Germany.
This Pullmann costed 390.000 Reichsmark, (at a time, when a small house and garden was just 20.000 RM)
The Rheingold-carriage had bullet-proof windows, a conference-room , sleeping-rooms , a bath etc.
After the war it was first used by the US-High Comissioner for Germany, later by the German chancellor Willy Brandt.
You may not step inside the Rheingold, but take a look through the windows !

Dieser "Rheingold" - Salonwagen wurde speciell für Hitler's Reichsaussenminister Joachim von Rippentrop gebaut.
1937 wurde er festiggestellt und kostete 390.000 Reichsmark zu einer Zeit, als ein Einfamilienhaus nur 20.000 RM kostete.
Die original Innenausstattung mit Konferenzraum, Schlafzimmern, Bad etc. ist vollständig erhalten.
Nach dem 2. WK wurde der Salonwagen zunächst vom US-Hochkomissar für Deutschland benützt, später von Deutschen Kanzler Willy Brandt.
Im Museum kann man den Wagen nicht betreten, aber durch die Fenster sehen !

Off The Beaten Path: NSU Kettenrad HK 101 of 1942

This quite unique vehicle was built for the german army supply departement and was ment to carry half a ton of equipment and 3 soldiers accross any kind of terrain.
8300 of them were produced and many of them, who had survived the war were used afterwards in the forests and agriculture.
The Kettenrad had 36 HP and 1230 kg
the top-speed was 70 km/h

1940 erhielt die Firma NSU den Auftrag, ein extrem geländegängiges Fahrzeug zu entwickeln mit einer Zuladung von 500 kg.
Dies gelang innerhalb kürzester Zeit, weil bereits vorhandene Motorradteile verwendet wurden.
Insgesamt wurden 8300 Kettenräder erzeugt und viele davon wurden nach dem Krieg in der Land- und Forstwirtschaft eingesetzt.
Es wurde ein Motor mit 36 PS
aus dem Opel Olympia verwendet
Das Fahrzeug hatte leer 1230 kg
und erreichte eine Geschwindigkeit von 70 km/h
