  • Altpörtel is one of the remaining medieval town-gates, dating back to the 13th century.
It is one of the most beautiful town-gates in Germany and you may climb up in order to get a great panorama-view over the town !
The building on the left of my picture is another historic house and today it is one of the best cafes in the centre of Speyer.

    The tower is open:
    april 1st - oct.31st
    Mon-Fri : 10.00-12.00a.m.+ 02.00-04.00p.m.
    Sat&Sun: 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m.

  • In my personal opinion THIS is the most beautiful of all of the many churches that you may see in Speyer.
It is a protestant church and just about 400 meters from the big cathedral in a quiet side-street (grosse Himmelsgasse) and might easily overseen by the tourists.
The church was built between 1701 and 1707 and is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Germany.
You may have a look into the church through an iron-fence at the entrance - see my next picture !

On this map Gr.Himmelsgasse seems to be a major street, but in reality it is rather small.

  • This is the church-interior of the Holy trinity Church the way you may see it from the iron-gate at the entrance.
Unfortunately it is always locked during the day, BUT you may ask at the tourist information - they offer tours to this church as well.
Just click on my picture to see at least a part of the very special and beautifully painted wooden ceiling of the church.
All of the interior is made of wood, and this is one of the reasons why tourists are not allowed to enter the church on their own.

  • The cathedral St.Maria and St.Stephan dates back to the year 1024 and is also called "Kaiserdom" (cathedral of the emperors) , because 8 emperors are buried there in the Krypta.
In the year 1061 the cathedral was finished and it was the biggest church in the western hemisphere at that time.
(Only the Hagia Sopia / Aya Sofya was bigger )
The cathedral is 134 meters long and 37 meters wide. The highest tower is 73 meters.

  • Romanic churches are mostly not very fancy and will have only a very few special ornaments.
In Speyer you should really take a closer look at this lovely window on top of the main entrance and all of its great ornaments.
Just click on my picture and enjoy the great details of the architecture and keep in mind, this cathedral was built almost 1000 years ago, without cranes or other modern machineries,.
And in most cases the architects did not get a lot more than a house to live in, some food and maybe a really small amount of extra-money.

  • The walls inside of the cathedral Holy Mary and St.Stephen are almost empty, except for a long row of great paintings, obviously added a long time after the foundation of the cathedral.

  • On both sides of the main-entrance of the cathedral St.Mary and St.Stephen you may see a hall with great sculptures and monuments.
On my picture the monument for King Rudolph of Habsburg, who was buried in Speyer in the year 1291.
These monuments may also be seen outside of the opening-times of the cathedral, as these niches are open to the outside and only locked by big iron gates.

Things To Do: the pilgrim on the way to Santiago de Compostela

  • Speyer always was an important place to visit for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela in Portugal.
Such Jakobs-Pilgrimage became again quite popular recently and many people still walk the traditional Jakob's roads through Europe, passing by the most important catholic churches.
Mostly these places also offer some really cheap places to spend the night, when they ask for it at the church-office. ( I am rather sure, it will not be possible to sleep there for ordinary backpackers)

In Maximilianstrasse - between the cathedral and the Altpörtel - you may see a giant Jakobs-pilgrim in the traditional clothes & walking-stick.

    --- --- ---- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---

Don't forget to take a look for the lovely church of the Holy trinity, just about 100 meters to the left from this monument !

  • The old townhall of Speyer was destroyed in 1689 and rebuilt between 1712 - 1726 under the architect Adam Breunig from Mainz.
Inside there is a great Rokkoko-hall that is often used for concerts.
It is a pity, the hall was not open, while I visited Speyer.
Look at the great entrance-gate of the townhall :
Under the balcony you may see a big Jakob-shell, a proud symbol that you may see at most of the villages along the Jakobs-paths across of Europe.
Beeing an important city along the pilgrim-path also ment good business since plenty of centuries.

  • When you walk on towards the Altpörtel you will get to a lovely fountain with Siegfried on top, who has killed the dragon already.
The building in the back used to be the place, where the coins were made untill 1748, when it burned down. Then it became a warehouse and the seat of some public offices, but the lovely building itself is still called "Alte Münze" today.
Click on my picture and see the great ornaments around the clock on top of the building !

ooooo ooooo ooooo ooooo ooooo ooooo ooooo ooooo ooooo oooo
Around this fountain you will see a lot of great garden-cafes with a perfect view on the townhall, the Alte Münze and the cathedral !

A very interesting and informative page on a city that I ignored. I have bookmarked it as I feel that both the city, the Technik Museum and the Historisches Museum der Pfalz are must see!
