Grevenburg is the name of the small castle-ruins that you may see high above Bruecken-Schaenke on my photograph. Grevenburg Castle was built in 1350 by Johann III, count of Sponheim, who was a son of the legendary countess Loretta. Untill the year 1437 it was the family-seat of the counts of Sponheim, but during the 17th and 18th century it had 13 different owners untill it was finally destroyed by french troops in 1734. Nowadays Ruine Grevenburg is quite a popular destination for hikers and you will find also a nice restaurant there and from its terrace you will have an excellent view of the Mosel-valley.

Things To Do: Brueckenschaenke

Brueckenschaenke is the most popular building of Traben-Trarbach, in the first moment it almost looks like the part of an old fortification, BUT in fact it was built in 1899 in combination with the bridge by the famous Art-Nouveau-architect Möhring, who built quite a lot of buildings in Traben-Trarbach. The seperate villages of Traben and Trarbach were combined into 1 town in 1904. There was a bad fire in 1876, that is one of the reasons, why there are quite a lot of art-nouveau-buildings in that village. In Brueckenschaenke there is a gallery with changing exhibitions and a restaurant on the first floor. Take a look around the building, you may see great sculptures and reliefs by the local artist Wendhut.

Directions: You cannot miss this building, you will have to pass through under it, when driving fro Cochem to Bernkastel-Kues.

Things To Do: Loretta-Haus

Loretta-Haus was built as a hotel in 1906-1908 and it shows various persons of the history of the village. First of all there is a painting of Loretta, the legendary countess of Sponheim, right above the main entrance of the building and another painting showing the castle Grevenburg. Take some time to see all of the nice details of this building and you will see archibishop Balduin von Trier who has to sign a treaty, you may see fishermen, a noble lady with a falcon, the coats of arms of the dynasties of Pfalz-Sponheim and Baden- Sponheim and on the very top : a sculpture called "Moselblümchen" - the lady on the top of the building.

Directions: Loretta-Haus is in the northern part of the village, just about 50 meters behind the bridge, you will pass by it by car (but will hadly find a good parking-lot there !)

Things To Do: The old post-office of Traben-Trarbach

The old post-office of Traben-Trarbach is another of the many buildings with interesting architecture in Traben-Trarbach. It was built at the opposite side of Bruecken-Schaenke and next to Loretta-Haus and the few ornate sculptured sandstone-decorations are also done by the same artists as Loretta-haus. When you come by car across the bridge, there is a tiny spot where you may park your car in order to take a few pics, I think there were just 2 spaces for parking cars, otherwise you have to drive to the end of that street and search for a parking there.

Directions: The old Postamt is at the end of the bridge, at the left bank of the river Mosel, you cannot miss it, when crossing that bridge !

Things To Do: Bernkastel-Kues is just 10km from Tr-Trarbach

Bernkastel-Kues is maybe the most beautiful village of the Mosel-valley with lots of half-timbered houses and an interesting castle-ruin high above the village. It is in a distance of just 10km according to the VT-database, BUT of course that is the direct line only, and there is NO direct road there, BUT only a few tiny paths through the vinyeards. In fact the drivingtime by car through the Mosel-valley is around 1 hour or more along the winding meanders of the Mosel-valley...

Directions: The only way to get to Bernkastel from Traben-Trarbach is to drive 40-50 km through the Mosel-valley, while hiking-distance is just about 10km !

christine.j Fri May 8, 2009 18:12 UTC Traben-Trarbach is a perfect place for a short trip after having dropped off people in Hahn. Thank you for this very nice page. | travelfrosch Sun Aug 5, 2007 02:32 UTC Excellent page on my former home. I too choked when I heard the name, "Flughafen Frankfurt/Hahn". As for wine, I much preferred the Trabener Gaispfad, Wolfer Sonnelay, Trarbacher Schlossberg, and Reiler Sorentberg to any wine from Kroev.
