Things To Do: a special place at the "tip of Danmark"

This is a very unique place - looking on the pic to your left is the North Sea - it would normally be the rough Sea, big differences between ebb and tide at many places, rough weather and high seas while going up to Iceland - but here, at the tip of Danmark it is quite calm and almost no waves at all... And on this photograph to your right is Skagerak - and it would normally have no or just very smooth waves - but here it was rather rough and steady heavy waves are reaching the shores... And in my understanding these strong waves would normally shovel away this sandy beach within a day - - but it stayed the same all centuries and makes the very northern Tip of Danmark.

Things To Do: Don't mis-calculate the distance

When standing on the small hill close to the parking, you might get the impression, that the tip of Danmark is just a few minutes to walk. In reality it is about 35 minutes to walk through the sandy dunes and it might be the best to take off your shoes. During the high season you may ride on the "Sandormen" and it will take you there within about 10 minutes as it cannot take the direct route from the parking, but will take you there on a path going through the high dunes. The ride is quite comfortable and you may see the landscape through large windows.

Things To Do: Step up the lighttower of Skagen

Lighttowers like this one are always a good chance to take a picture of the great coastline. Some of the lighthouses have a cafe and you are allowed to walk up against a small fee and see the flat landscape from above. The lighttower has also a small museum and a large parking in front of it - but be careful, you have to share the parking with a lot of local geese, searching fro food in the nearby dunes.

Things To Do: see the grave of Holger Drachman

|
Holger Drachman was a sailor from Danmark, an adventurer and painter, who also wrote several books about his travels - he died in 1908 and he was buried close to parking in the Dunes. When searching for his grave, you have to look out for the point, where lots of flags are blowing in the wind. This place is also a perfect spot to take photographs, as it is a bit higher than the other places. The only better place to take some photographs is the light-tower of course.

Things To Do: Skagen museum - for great local painters

It was the special light of the area around Skagen that made plenty of well-known painters decide to spend some time there and so you may see their paintings in the Skagen Museum today. Anne Archer, Michael Ancher, H.Drachmann,S.Kroyer and many others made sure by their paintings, that the ordinary, hard life of the danish population in former centuries comes alive, when seeing their paintings today. The Art-colony of Skagen was founded a long time before the stream of tourists detected Skagen as a special place for their vacation.

Things To Do: Den Tilsandede Kirk
|
Tip Rating: |
 |

|
|
Den Tilsandede Kirk is a church in the south of the town of Skagen. It used to be the largest danish church in medieval times but it had to be closed in 1795 because the dunes had reached the entrance-gates of that church and blocked it. There was no other way to use the church, than to shovel away heaps of sand each week, so the church was taken down again in 1810, but the churchtower was left and also used as a landmark, helping the sailors to navigate in these dangerous waters.

Things To Do: the kiosk has a roof covered by grass

Close to the large car-parking you will see this great building with a roof, totally covered by grass. This certainly makes a lot of sense and keeps the house warm in winter and cool during the summertime. The building is the kiosk, where you may buy souvenirs and postcards. This was the traditional way to cover houses, it is a pity there are only a few such buildings left over.

Things To Do: Don't miss the town of Skagen

Skagen is a small town and it has plenty of lovely houses. Plenty of people go there to spend their vacations, at the end of Danmark and far away from the noisy streets. You may choose among several large camping-sites and plenty of B&Bs and a few hotels. Skagen makes a perfect day-trip from places like Aarhus or any other place in the north of Danmark ! Many of the buildings in Skagen are painted in a special type of yellow - the so-called "Skagen-yellow" - see my last picture.
